Subject: Awesome night!
This was one of the best shows I've heard at the Boom Boom Boom Room. Jordan on B3 organ, Dave's guitar, singing and songwriting. Solid drums!

Subject: Dave Stein Bubhub
Dave Stein Bubhub
Boom Boom Room, San Francisco
Saturday 2008 1018
It was a lazy Saturday night, and I left the house around 9:30, missed the bus I hoped to catch by a minute, so grabbed a cab as I figured that since Bubhub was opening, they might go on at 9:45.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a fair number of people inside, and many I knew.
BUBHUB
Bubhub started around 9:50, Jordan Feinstein was on keys, primarily the B3. The quartet was led by Dave plays lead guitar and vocal, with a drummer (Chris Talbot ?) and bassist (Josh ?), who’s names I did not quite catch. They were introduced once mid-set, but not again at the end. The personnel is different than listed on the website, so perhaps this is not a static band personnel-wise. I am certain Jordan was not on keys last time I saw Bubhub, so I assume he was just sitting in.
I got the sense this was a friends and family turnout for the opener. And the band had good stage energy, though the energy transferred more slowly to the crowd. Encouragement from Dave brought a few more out on the dance floor.
The band did several songs which I assume are original material. The certainly hit a stride by the third or fourth song. “Stick Around” a mid tempo rocker with blues influences, nice B3 work in an extended solo, with the five string bass holding a melody line. Nice guitar work from Dave.
By mid set the room had about 60+ folks there, and the dance floor had a good number of shaking bodies.
A song “How High Is the Moon” (not sure of all titles) also had some nice hooks and guitar work.
The band caught a funkier groove for a song call “ ‘Till the Break of Day,” again escalating the dance energy in the room.
The midset run of original material ended with a song called “Rolling the Mile” (?) which was clearly a showcase tune, well played, and the band had a very interesting extended jam on the theme.
Jordan then sang the Band’s “Ophelia,” which segued into a nice “Shakedown.” Everyone shined on the jams in these two songs, and Dave had some great leads on his Explorer clone. This of course had the greatest dance response, and the band then ended the set with what seemed more a rift than a song with the lyric “Don’t Throw Your Vote Away”. I wondered whether that was composed or an improve, so perhaps it needs work if meant to be a song.
The set ended around 11:05. I think Dave is a talent to watch. I hope he has a committed band to develop with him.

Notes

Dave Stein Bubhub: Dave Stein (guitar/vocals), Jordan Feinstein (keys/vocals), Josh Atlas (bass guitar), Chris Thallman (drums)
