Subject: Is the State Theater a nice place?
1st Set: Night two from a destination on the organe line - pretty far out if my college days serve me well. We open with a trip to the Crimson Tide - "Alabama" with boards sounding just like Brent would have in '80. Reasonably short but I was always a sucker for this C Berry simplicity. Seemingly one of the more difficult tunes the Dead constructed - "Hell" is next - one can smell an original setlist just by the two openers - which I believe never were played back to back in GD's history. Kinda served the same purpose - and 'Alabama' wasn't played for several years in the late 80s/early 90s. A solid, dense performance - not organic spaztic singing but balanced. A couple minutes of tuning - and then...a trip to the countryside to visit that vicious "Dire Wolf." Such cheek. Almost reaches clever glee during the bridge (2:20) The good times continue with the spirited dual singing of "Passenger." Scott in particular does some lovely hammond in the early 4's. Time for the carnivalesque tragic story of a jelly-roll lovin dude - "Dupree." Milk chocolate sounds yummy now. Rolled on pleasantly. "Never Trust a Woman" At first it's a slow-burner with organ licks that can't match Mydland - but John takes it over in the late 2's...and it works. Tragically, Scott's voice appears healthy - but it's not a balls to the walls singing job - his organ solo in the 4's is better. A St. Louis blues number "BT Wind" is next. Nicely sung til mic problems for about twenty seconds - nor maybe Rob just forgot some of the words like he did during "Hell." Good solid work though nothing terribly memorable. Though I preferred the acoustic performance on 08-31-04, this succint "So Many Roads" still climaxes with heart. It's about time for the Dylan slot and "Queen Jane" fills that void. I do miss Jerry's MIDI attack as it stirs my pot. Of course there's some nice licks - just as Lisa can do perfectly fine leading us threw a convincing "You Ain't Woman." "Mighty" just has a sparkle of a riff - so festive and inviting - a cheery version and time for a set break.
2nd Set: It's not akin to 'Seastones' but a major dissolution jam and at 5:00 they break into "Viola." It's extensively jammy - not dynamite, but a funky good time. Around the middle 12's I thought maybe a 'Rider' Bust a nut climaxing in the early 14's. An acoustic Rob provides the "Weather Report." An anthemic sing-along before a lovely, airy, silky "Let it Grow." It feels like the dead of night which is why I don't need to hear the Dead's Kate Bush entry "Sunrise." A slow jog through a lengthy subdued "Foolish" follows - sometimes John sounds as phlegmatic as Jerry but the former has more voice to offer. It blends in nicely to "Drums" the vocals surprise at 4:00, tribal ceremonies and plenty of time to drop out.An old-fashioned "Space" eventually flattens leaving room for the rock to return - a sloppily sung "Miracle." The end of the song is cut - instead it's the pleading "Gimme." Like usual the additional voices add to my enthusiasm. A tender rarely played "Believe it or Not" - maybe John can't reach the alto notes JG could - a raunchy Lisa/Scott assisted "Satisfaction" closes off the set in high fashion.
Rob expresses shock the mic actually works. Thanks the crowd and Tim Walther(?) (maybe owner of establishment) forcing him onstage, promo for the All Good Festival and hoping everyone gets home safely.
Scott helps the band sing 'it's gonna be alright' eerie - on a decent "Revolution" to close out the spring '05 tour.
RIP Scott

I was at this show and DSO was on fire. VLB 2nd set opener melted my brain!!! This is a must have. Without a doubt one of the best shows I've ever seen (along with 6/4/05 @ electric factory.) We miss you Scott. To the rest of the band, thanks for keeping up the jams and spreading the LOVE to us all.
