As a towering conclusion to the 56th season, Barbara Schubert and the DuPage Symphony Orchestra present Richard Strauss' (1864-1949) masterful Eine Alpensinfonie, a vivid orchestral expression of a full-day excursion in the Bavarian Alps that recalls the composer's own experience hiking on a mountain at age fourteen. Scored for huge instrumental forces, this expansive and compelling tone poem is known as one of the most expressive tone poems in musical literature. The program opens with Edward German's (1862-1936) "Spring" from The Seasons and continues with Ralph Vaughan Williams' (1872-1958) delicate The Lark Ascending, featuring violinist Bella Hristova, a rising star who took First Prize in the 2008-2009 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York City. Ms. Hristova is also featured in Astor Piazzolla's (1921-1992) "Spring" from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. Ms. Hristova appears by arrangement with Young Concert Artists, Inc. of New York City in this performance given at Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville, Illinois on 15 May 2010. The program was repeated on 16 May 2010. |
