This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. This particular segment features Sergio Amadeu, who is the President of ITI Brazil, which is the Brazilian federal agency that answers to the President of Brazil on technological issues. In this snip, Sergio talks about how he came to head Brazil's ITI agency. He was responsible for creating telecenters in Sao Paulo, a city of 16 million people. These telecenters became very popular, and the story of their success caught the ear of Brazilian President Lula da Silva, and Sergio was asked to join the government as a result. Brazil is interested in free open source software because of the freedom that it gives Brazil to manage its technological infrastructure. Since Sergio moved to the federal government, the telecenters in Sao Paulo have grown in number and as of the time of this interview, they had 300,000 regular users. The telecenters use Linux, Mozilla, OpenOffice.org, and other similar open source software tools to let people in the poorest parts of Sao Paulo get on-line to improve their lives.
