This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. Thanks to Thomas King, a writer for Linux.com and LXer, for doing the rough editing for this series of interview segments!
This series of 11 video segments features Brazilian entreprenuer Marcelo Marques, the prinicpal of Brazilian network security and training company 4Linux. He is also the principal of LPI Brazil, an international training and certification company. This footage was shot on the premises of Marcelo's company, called 4Linux, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The shoot starts while the afternoon sun is declining behind Marcelo. The last few segments are a bit darker than we would have liked, but the audio is good throughout, and Marcelo is such an engaging character that you will want to stick with his interview to the end.
In segment 03 (Tape 120~003), Marcelo talks a bit more about the security training game used by 4Linux in training. The game features Maddog Hall (as a character) teaching a gamer to become a security engineer. They work with banks to provide security, although he is not allowed to give the names of his bank customers.
In segment 04 (Tape 120~004). Marcelo says that Linux is great for security because it is open to inspection by anyone. They have on-line security training. There are people in Japan who wake up at 3 a.m. to take his courses. He thinks that it is because of currency and earnings differences around the world. They have also trained people in Spain and Portugal. They are also IBM partners. They went through 8 interviews over a course of 5 months. They collaborate with IBM in providing services to the Brazilian government. They partnered with IBM because IBM has the brand name recognition that helped their customers believe in the quality of 4Linux's services. They grew their revenue 73% from 2003 to 2004.
In segment 05 (Tape 120~005), Marcelo says that Linux works so well that the clients sometimes as to reduce the contract because less support is need to keep Linux running well than was originally anticipated by the client. [Marcel's eys shine as he tells this story, he is so proud of Linux]. This is why his company focuses on training and big projects. Training is a constant revenue flow for him. 4Linux will work with IBM to train 700 people in the Brazilian government to train the trainers inside the Brazilian government. Sergio Amadeu and Jon Maddog Hall were collaborating on this project, to give speeches at the beginning. Marcelo says that Sergio Amadeu is charismatic due to his intelligence, and has transformed the IT department for Brazil. Sergio talked the Brazilian government into cutting costs by using Free Open Source Software. Sergio is also good at getting influential people behind him, people whom Marcelo names in this video.
