This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. Thanks to Thomas King, a writer for Linux.com and LXer, for doing the rough editing for this series of interview segments!
In this series of 6 interview segments, real-time Linux kernel developer Bill Huey talks about his experience with the efficacy of the Linux kernel society. He explains why he thinks that the Linux kernel project has proven to be such a huge success over more than a decade of existence, while other Free Open Source Software communities have proven less viable. He also compares the strength and weaknesses of corporate software development versus his experience with the Linux kernel.
In segment 05 (Tape 155~008), Bill says that his work will allow for more defined control of the computer, because it is more focused, rather than the more general purpose software offered by Microsoft. He says that the wireless community is pushing the envelope with current technologies. His work is fundamental research, and he is not sure how his work will be used, because it is so fundamental and low level. He says that he is motivated by recognition in a peer review environment. He needs it for his sanity, for his resume, and to express his creative side. He gets to pick and choose what he wants to do, rather than have to do boring stuff. He has a great job because his success in the Free Open Source Software world has allowed him to work at stuff that he finds interesting and does well at. He has worked for some real heavy weight employers.
In segment 06 (Tape 155~009) he says that he worked for one year with the Unix groups that resulted in Sun Microsystems and some other really visionary people. There were leadership issues, though, and Linux has come to displace much of the energy of that group. The BSD groups have have a 10 to 15 year lead time, but Linux has caught up due to good leadership. He thinks that the Linux community has managed its communication and coordination better than any corporation he has seen.
