This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. Larry Augustin's bio on his blog describes him as an angel investor and advisor to early stage technology companies. He has served on the boards of important companies that have helped to prove that Free Open Source Software is financially viable across several different business models. He is one of the group who coined the term "Open Source", a move which has been a key marketing move that has allowed business managers to understand the power of the Free Software movement that Richard Stallman started in 1984. In 20 years (by 2028), after the real world digital tipping point has happened, Richard Stallman's vision of the universal freedom to control and change software will be thoroughly woven into all but the most arcane and cutting edge software packages. Larry Augustin's business smarts are one of the bridges that has helped move the GNU/Linux operating system and other Free Software into the mainstream.
Perhaps the best example of Larry's leadership is his work at VA Linux, which he founded in 1993, where Larry launched SourceForge.net, the world's largest Open Source software development community. Also at VA, he acquired Andover.net, merging SourceForge.net, Linux.com, Slashdot, and other well-known Open Source Internet sites to form the Open Source Development Network (OSDN). To this day, Larry's company, Sourceforge, is known on the NASDAQ as LNUX. Larry holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University, and a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame.
