This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive.
This series of 3 segments features Rolf Pedersen, a volunteer at Lindependence 2008, talking about his role in demonstrating Mandriva Linuxat Lindependence 2008.
The purpose of this video is to support a DTP story about Lindependence 2008, which is an event planned by Larry Cafiero and Ken Starks (aka Helios) to persuade a town of 6,000 people to try out Free Open Source Software for one week, starting July 28, 2008. On July 13 and 15, 2008, there were town meetings at the First Presbeterian church on Highway 9 in Felton for the purpose of familiarizing people with GNU-Linux, and helping them with any issues that they might have in using Linux. This video was shot inside the Felton Presbyterian Church, in Taylor Hall.
In segment 01, Rolf introduces himself and says that he found out about this event on the Mandriva forum (a French company!) in a post placed there by Tracy Anne Ross from Australia! [That little factoid is, in itself, a very interesting little bit of trivia, because it exemplifies the very international nature of Free Open Software, meaning that Free Open Source Software is not confined by the pecularities of any one nation or culture.] Rolf then goes on to tell his history of using Linux. He acquired CDs from Mandriva. He then says that he uses Linux for writing letters, preparing invoices, emailing, and preparing a website describing his services as a general contractor. He came to the Lindependence event because he believes in giving back to a community that has given him so much. He says that he likes that Linux and Free Open Source Software gives power to the consumer. He also likes its international nature; and he likes its dynamic development process, involving thousands of people across the globe. Lindependence 2008 is a chance for people to gain exposure to Linux for the first time.
In segment 02, he says that giving back is part of what the Linux community is all about. He also came to this event because he loves to go to the Santa Cruz beaches anyway, and Felton is on the way there, and Felton itself is beautiful. He thinks about 30 to 40 people showed up on the July 13 installfest, which is when this footage was shot. He was demonstrating Mandriva on his EEE PC, which was hooked up to his cell phone to get an Internet connection. He likes being able to get an Internet connection anywhere, and he says that the EEE PC is not fast, but it sure is convenient to have such a portable computer. He's not sure when or if Linux will reach a 51% installbase on the consumer desktop, but he does think that it will happen eventually, since Linux is very appealing. he likes both the freedom and pragmatic advantages of Linux.
In segment 03, he expands a bit on why the freedom of Linux is importnat. He describes a bit more of his history of using Linux. He says he has been using Linux since Mandrake 7.1 in early 2000. He now uses Linux for 99% of his computing needs. His entire business runs on Linux. He keeps a Windows machine around just in case a friend or relative needs help with Microsoft Windows. He thinks it is wonderful that so many people came together today in Felton to learn about GNU-Linux and Free Open Source Software.
Here are the names of some of the children in the background of his interview: Vincent Malmrose; Kory Malmrose; Anna Malmrose; Jake Malmrose; Eric Rufle; Adam Rufle; and Mirano Cafiero.
