All but the frontispiece and first print are copies of woodcuts from the series known as Holbein's Dance of Death (Totentanz). The latter, after designs by Hans Holbein the Younger chiefly cut by Hans Lützelburger, was originally published in Lyon between 1538 (41 prints under title Les Simulachres & historiées faces de la Mort) and 1562 (58 prints under title Les Images de la Mort), with several prints first appearing in intermediate Latin issues under title Imagines Mortis. Cf. Mortimer, R. French 16th cent, 284-291
The accompanying verses are expanded translations of the quatrains in the original issues of the woodcuts (French quatrains variously attributed to Gilles Corrozet and Jean de Vauzelles; Latin translation by Georgius Aemilius)
The prints were copied and the verses translated chiefly from the 1547 Latin ed. (Imagines Mortis) with additional material from the 1562 French ed. (Les Images de la Mort). Cf. Preface, p. xxviii
