Subject: That old time evil rock'n'roll...
Everyone has their own visions of what rock should be. And it's true, rock has grown to encompass so many dimensions...
For me, I will always feel an intense joy for the kind of rock that still holds a sizeable connection to the sound of grunge, a dimension of protest, and perhaps some remaining conection to the element that helps us all survive the truth from day to day: Humor.
Having said that (and probably having said too much) I feel the responsibility to recommend still another recording by this Chilean recording ensemble. Probably it might not be too surprising to find their presence in the middle of a garage band recital. Simularly they would be at home following a performance by composer John Cage. Drop in a dancer with electronic buttons on her dress playing a keyboard and you have an appropriate context for that event.
This is without doubt... far from Doobie Brothers material. Raw, ambient, brash... Ensamble Cumshot belongs to a generation of artists that so believed in their ability to say what they wanted to say in a passion of disonant squawks and grunts that they so many times have managed to transcend the limits of aged instrumentation and formal composition styles.
This is fun music at first listen at least for someone seeking that mode of difference. Subsequently, I would suggest that perhaps it goes farther than that, depending on your affection for the group and willingness to listen further.
There is also a sense of harmony, of construction amid the deconstruction. It's almost like watching an orchestral event performed somewhere secretly in the depths of a dark alleyway. Is it cleansing? Or will someone have to carry you away after the performance has passed?
So for some, perhaps this would be a little frightening. And maybe it was meant to be that way.
I found that the untitled segment left me feeling as if I had been dragged into a doll factory where instead of constructing children's toys, perhaps we were watching them being pulled apart.
Since the group is from Chile, it probably should come as no surprise to non-spanish speakers that the lyrics-spoken words are primarily in Chile's native tongue. But if you don't speak spanish, please don't let that get in your way, the music is reason enough to listen. And perhaps this group may give you one of your first reasons to take the jump and cross over to the spanish speaking world.
