Subject: One of my favorite Fastball shows
I wish I had written about this show right after it happened, but circumstances prevented that. So here I am a week later trying to remember my impressions and reactions from that night. It helps that it was a memorable weekend, for many reasons. I also have audio and video recordings to refer to, but that may actually be a hindrance rather than a help. Much of the enjoyment of the shows is in the ambiance, the mood, the company, the beverages. And good as the recordings are, they certainly don't capture all of that. There is nothing quite like being there, in the moment.
The Saxon Pub is where I first heard Fastball a few years ago, when I became a fan. As mentioned before, it's always great to see them in front of the home crowd, and somehow The Saxon Pub just feels like home. The Rite Flyers got everybody in the mood, too. By the time Fastball came on, the crowd was pumped up and ready for great rock 'n roll.
Just like in Laredo, they opened with a new song; this time it was "White Noise". What can I add to Shelly's review, except to agree that this song absolutely kicks ass? This song alone was worth the price of admission. Of course, it was just a preview of the musical goodness to come. Admittedly, the band seemed a bit tentative on a few of the older numbers, probably from a scarcity of live shows recently. But they more than made up for it in their intensity and presence. And they nailed my favorites: "Our Misunderstanding" and "Falling Upstairs". They also did a great job on another new one: "All I Was Looking For Was You". As Shelly also pointed out, it sounds amazing in the full-band arrangement. "You're An Ocean" took a surprising twist when it segued into a long, rambling, guitar solo dominated "Don't Give Up On Me". They closed the first set with an outstanding rendition of "The Way", then briefly left the stage.
The encores were also amazing. They started with a great arrangement of Miles' "Working On A Love Song". I love the way that song, too, has evolved and developed. Then came the high-energy one-two punch of "'Til I Get It Right" and "Crawling From The Wreckage". The band left the stage after that, and we should have been satisfied. But no, we demanded another encore, and they conceded.
"I was in my car on my way home," said Miles. Then, having exhausted their set list, they improvised with a really cool version of Tom Petty's "Listen To Her Heart". That was unexpected, and I loved it (did I mention I'm a huge Tom Petty fan?). Then came the absolute highlight: "She Comes 'Round." Shelly did a pretty good job of summing that one up, too. And by the way that was The Velvet Underground's "Waiting For My Man" you heard during that jam session. Great stuff.
