First Aid for Boys still fresh after nearly 100 years
I was amazed to discover this book because although I am related to Norman B. Cole, one of the authors, I had no idea it existed until two years ago. Like Dr. Cole, I am a longtime Scout and Scouter who believes in being able to do things for oneself.
This book is different in that it is not just a how-to manual. Rather, it emphasizes practical first aid. It also understands that help will not always be a few minutes away via 911. When my troop is hiking in the mountains, I tell them that they are at least 2 hours from effective help so they had better be able to help themselves. Even at summer camp we are really at least an hour from effective help.
This book emphasizes being able to do enough to save a life before the professionals can get there. Only a handful of things in this book are dated and the experienced first aider will recognize them immediately.
So read the book, then take a first aid course, then start thinking about how you will respond in an emergency. If you need to be able to do more in an emergency than call 911, you need to read this book.
