Subject: Forgotten memories
Subject: Forgotten memories
I have been translating my mother's journal of things that happened since her youth growing up as an ethnic German in Yugoslavia. Forced out of their home and escaping to Austria after the war where I was born in 1950. Having been stripped of all our civil rights we had no choice but to remain living in former Russian army barracks. The poems and nursery rhymes ring true. Although I never learned German in school I recognize the sounds and understand the meanings to this day. They were sung and said with love and joy. Maria Lis
