Holograph
This unsigned fragment was presumably written by Maria Weston Chapman. She writes that D.L.C. [David Lee Child] will take charge of "the stand," if his wife assists him in the selections. The great petition was to be presented on the 20th of the month. [The petition may refer to the George Latimer and Grand Massachusetts Petition.] Maria W. Chapman refers to Philadelphia prejudices and dwells on the influence of [Thomas?] Earle. She comments: "He hates a whig worse if papist than Mrs. Child does a Calvinist." Although Chapman does not sympathize with David Lee Child's tariff views, she does not think that his connection with the anti-slavery cause destroys his right to preach them, even in a whig meeting
