I finally had to check this out...I liked the Evening Moods LP. and the There and Back Again lp..but thats studio work.I have been real shy when it comes to live DEAD music post Jerry...Maybe I was afraid..I am not sure."The Strange Remain" was good But that had Bruce Hornsby and they had already done a ton of live stuff together. I had heard alot of good things about DSO....but their Jerry in for our Jerry? Damn Right I was skeptical. I have 1000's of music memories twisted into my DNA via THE GRATEFUL DEAD. I did not want them altered or impersonated. Someone on here wrote that if you go see an orchestra you would not expect Mozart to turn up and conduct...nor would that take away from the quality of the music (that he was not there) So now I can accept what DSO has been doing.
People lets face it 7-7-89 was 21 years ago...in 21 more years we will be lucky if any of the Grateful Dead are still alive..Sorry I just can't see Phil at 91 still touring..And Bobby ,well he's looking more and more like Jerry every year (whats that about?)Seriously guys it won't be them but you can bet your last tape (remember tapes?)that someone will be playing this music through out the next 50 or 100 years. Someone like JK is fine with me. He has put in serious time getting his thing just right. Yes at times hes sounds JUST LIKE Jerry(on Guitar)..But noone I repeat No ONE will REPLACE JERRY . That is not what is happening here....JK is just continuing the tradition...God Bless him. As we all get older and all are favorite rock and rollers pass on.I think we may see more of this sort of thing...you know so and so band plays the music of the "insert your band here"...I have not been to a Dead related show since 93..or was it 94 but when this band comes to Philly I wanna be there. If i can't get a ticket I will listen from the outside "The Mann Music Center is GRATE for that" and dance....Hell I may even Dose...nothing wrong with that is there??;-)I know this is supposed to be a review but I just had to get that out.I love music and The Grateful Dead is my lifes blood...but i am looking Furthur into the future..and I see how this is gonna be.We were lucky enough to have the DEAD for 30+ years and now we will START To have other peoples interpretations of DEAD MUSIC> THIS IS THE CORRECT WAY TO KEEP THE SPIRIT ALIVE...and BTW is exactly what Jerry was doing playing all of that Blue grass...I will Be on the bus forever...it really don't matter whos driving..as long as we go furthur..PEACE I gave this show 4 and 1/2 because I thought that JK seemed almost afraid to sing the Jerry songs (I am I the only one who heard that?)As if he needed the fans to say..Its OK brother Go for it...maybe the band too?? Otherwise this is the best live Dead I have heard since the early 90 tour!!!!

What's the fuss? This sounds better than 95% of the other music I hear these days. I'd rather hear Jimmy Herring on guitar, but he's Gone with the Wind..

Not a fan of Kadlicek
Well, the music isn't bad, but it's nothing spectacular. It sounds a lot like the Dead in their last few years with Jerry...tired and somewhat uninspired.
I know I sound cynical but I have to say that Phil and Bobby have really taken a step down playing with Kadlicek. I personally do not think JK should sing. His voice sucks. I'm not sure how much he is trying to sound like Jerry, but either way he sounds like a bad Garcia impersonator.
I think if Phil and Bobby want to do Dead tunes, they should get a guitarist with a more original style, not someone who mimics Jerry. Someone like Warren Haynes comes to mind as a good fit for this band. The Dead were always about originality and being spontaneous. Putting a Garcia "sound-alike" in the band is just pulling their reputation down and making it into more of just a novelty. They're milking it a little too much for the real Grateful Dead sound.

Further
I think this is the best post Jerry line-up.I don't think John is a Jerry clone or is trying to imitate him like the way an Elvis impersonator does.I think he plays the songs correctly and that inspires Phil and Bob to play the songs right.Almost 15 years and I think they drifted away from the essence of it and needed a spark.Jeff Chimenti is always good...

why do we like music..it's something innate, spiritual, probably evolutionary about melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics, emotion that resonates within us...it's not owned by any one musician, it's out there...
Just like Jerry couldn't capture it every time, especially towards the end, this incarnation won't either...but for me, when John K goes into the outro solo of Half-step...I definitely feel it.

Old Dedaheads...
This is still good "old" Grateful Dead music. Seems to me that a few of the reviewers (haters?) around here never went to any of the OLD shows, pre-1980s, or they would appreciate this as music in the great Grateful Dead tradition. CAN'T sound as good original without Jerry, I don't care WHO you throw in the mix, but they sure can come close. You've got to remember that not all of the old shows were "perfect"; we've been to quite a few shows where there were only 1 or 2 really GOOD sets in a weekend, but ALL the music was enjoyable and the family made it worth the trip!!!

ANYONE WHO DOSEN'T THINK THIS BAND SOUNDS GREAT PROBABLY SAT IN THE PHIL ZONE FOR WAY TO MANY YEARS. I HAVE HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF LIVE GRATEFUL DEAD, ACE, RATDOG, THE OTHER ONES, PHIL AND FRIENDS ETC. (IT'S ALL I LISTEN TO, JUST ASK MY ASK AND DAUGHTER) BASED ON THAT AND SEVERAL CONVERSATIONS WITH BILLY OVER THE LAST DECADE I THINK I CAN MAKE A FAIR JUDGEMENT IN SAYING...
"BRING IT ON THE ROAD"....BUT WAIT...WITH ALL RESPECT TO JAY AND JOE THEY HAVE TO BE SENT ELSEWHERE BECAUSE THE REAL RYTHYM DEVILS NEED TO REJOIN THIER NEWEST MEMBER AND THIER OLD BAND MATES. AS FOR JEFF, NOT BY DEFAULT BUT BECAUSE HE IS SO AWESOME ON KEYS AND AN OFFICIAL MEMBER OF THE RYTHYM DEVILS, HE MUST STAY ON. WHILE WE ARE PUTTING TOGETHER OUR FANTASY LIVING BAND COULD WE ALSO HAVE BRANFORD SHOW UP ABOUT EVERY FIFTH SHOW.
I THINK WARREN IS GREAT AND ENJOY THE SOUND HE ADDS BUT WARREN HAS PLENTY OF OTHER THINGS ON HIS HANDS AND JOHN IS INCREDIBLE....ALMOST TO MUCH LIKE THE OLD MAN AT TIMES....SCARY BUT GREAT.
THE MORE I LISTEN TO THIS SHOW THE MORE I LIKE IT, BUT STILL WANT BILLY AND MICKEY.
BOTTOM LINE....THIS IS GREAT MUSIC BY GREAT MUSICIANS....IF YOU DON'T NEED IT WE UNDERSTAND "JUST PASS IT ON"

Bring back Phil and Friends. Any of his bands are more entertaining than this. I love the Bob Weir of 20-40 years ago. He's not the same, he's like an anchor pulling everyone down around him and if ou don't agree, YOU'RE NOT LISTENING.
Phil on the other hand, plays just as well as ever. 5 starts for this? If a great sounding show on the LMA from 1969 get 5 stars, how could this one possible qualify for even 3 stars? Then again this is a GD world where charlie miller is "God". F*&@ that!
The "music never stopped" but it doesn't guarantee it's gonna be any good.

Folks...after many different band member changes, this is as close as it gets to reliving what once was (and I know many of you are trying to do that and many of you will never go see any DEAD live again, thats a shame. Now lets get Mickey and Billy back in the mix and spread the music in a spring tour..... It is great that at 70 and near 70 they insist on keeping the music alive!

Without Weir there is no Grateful Dead
I just don't get it. I realize that music is totally subjective but I just can't understand how anyone can imagine the Grateful Dead with out Bob Weir's rhythm .
His incredible rhythm guitar technique is unparalleled in musical history. Even Lesh and Garcia ultimately acknowledged that Weir was the perfect accompaniment to the music. His anti rhythm and accent placement of his chord and back up lead was perfect for the Dead's sound.
Bitch, complain and put him down, there is no one close to his skill or who fits better or could match him.
In my Humble opinion.

MAN O MAN!
To all the haters out there...ARE YOU DEAF??? This is the Dead sound that the earth has been demanding! No more slow, dirge like Ratdog shows, no more Warren's Allman Bros. distorted guitar(sorry Warren fans)! DID YOU REALLY LISTEN TO THIS SHOW BEFORE YOU REVIEWED! Just listen to Feel Like a Stranger and Shakedown Street...INCREDIBLE! The funk is back, the jams are tight, John is an incredible guitar player! The EMOTION is back in the air at Furthur shows! I can't tell you how many Ratdog shows I've been to where I see people SLEEPING in their seats! The magic died when Jerry died but little bits of it are seeping back to the surface!
This band is FAR from a cover band, they are just recreating the Dead sound in the way it is SUPPOSED TO SOUND. I'm not saying Bob and Phil shouldn't be creative or have artistic control, but I go to Dead shows to hear truly inspired music. Music that lifts me up and makes me want to dance all night, music that touches my soul! I just don't get that from deadpan Ratdog shows! Here Bobby and Phil are playing the best music I have heard them play without Jerry! Just "listen for the SECRETS"! I am very thankful the magic is in the air and on the archive for us to hear again!

After listening, everyone's instruments are playing a pretty cool role.
And, have always Bob's parts, even though he's currently talking more than singing... If I were King for a day I would say this should be more the reason to let JK handle more of the singing.
Since I am not, I still think this is pretty darn good music!

I gave it a listen
I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I have seen the old Dead and heard quite a few of this New Dead stuff as well. The band is no where near as crisp as they used to be and I don't really get the idea that they will ever have that crisp feeling ever again regardless of who sings, plays, etc. Shakedown was played and sung fairly weak. To listen to 17 minutes of it was not fun either. I miss the old Jerry...sure, you bet, who doesn't, but to try and give this the quality/proof of life seal of approvable seems to be an attempt to pillage more money out of me to go to a show that I just can't justify going to. Just out of curiousity how much did 3 shows cost you?

Haight, I attended all three Furthur shows at the fox theater. Personally, for me, John Kadlecik worked very well into the line up. To me, he is not a Jerry impersonator at all. He is a fan like you and I, and delievers one great performance. He is not a detraction, but an attraction. Lay down your guns and give it an honest listen.

Terrific band, too bad about Love Haight
Wow, all of us there at the Fox knew - KNEW! Hallelujah! - that the Grateful Dead is back. The Grateful Dead was always about something beyond a group of amazing individuals, including of course the angelic JG. I am so grateful that they kept trying, and of course Phil Lesh deserves most credit for this dogged service to the muse. For a long time I was depressed, missing Garcia, feeling nostalgic for ye olde tymes. No more. NOW is what it is all about.
Furthur is the real deal, as everyone at the Fox knows. LoveHaight wasn't there, and good thing! He sounds like a real drag! We all had a blast, and if you listen to these shows you'll get some idea of why. Of course, as you know, you kind of had to be there. :)

It’s sad that the internet archive is being used to wage a personal vendetta against the decision to make John Kadlicek guitarist for Furthur . Ironically, the attention only serves to stimulate more support for JK. After all, written words can lie, but when you listen to the music, you can’t fool your ears.

If your not able to listen to a show like this or even just take a step back and look at it. this is the best reincarnation of the Grateful Dead we are ever gonna get. John brings just enough of his style to it. i mean its the dead, we all want jerry playing...but this is really good live music.
