I hope to hear some new originals to take the place of some of these songs. As much as I love The Dead/Ratdog/Other Ones and now enjoy Further, I think its time to give some Grateful Dead songs a break, work on 3 or 4 new and original jam band classics-to-be!

Dont you people ever get sick of hearing the same songs for the past 40 years? Oh shit someone questioned the dead? Ok people tear me apart if you must but this stuff is boring and overdone. Glad to see a cover of Ryan Adams and the Cardnials, they had potential to be one of the best but sadly they seperated. Yes stella blue Ryan can be a whinny bitch, but hes still brilliant. Dear Prudence sounds terrible. Just cause their playin the dead doesnt mean this shit is good, hang it up oldtimers. Next youll say Bob Dylan sounds good still too.

Subject: Nice recording - great show!
Subject: Nice recording - great show!
From the 1st notes played during the tune up i was relieved that the sound wasn't complete garbage. The last time i saw a show at the Utica Aud was the Allman bro's in the mid 80's and it was horrible due to shitty sound alone. I'm from the immediate area and ive never heard of any upgrades to the auditoriums acoustics so this came as a nice surprise to me. Maybe it was just the sound man for the Allmans at the time... who knows.
Good Morning little School Girl opener...
IMO not the best choice for an opener. This version is reminiscent of the Weir and Wasserman versions Ive heard in the past. Uppity, but vocals in weird places. Well played but not a good opener tune for my liking.
Promised Land
Nice little rocker. Visions of late 80's Bobby here. Good pronounced vocals with some ass behind them. Nice to hear after some of the past Ratdoggy shows ive seen. JK sounds good...vintage fender Jerry sound. Twangy - country-ish - and perfect for this tune. Phil is right on spot of course. I was missing some of the nice fill in rolls and splashes with the drummers. They are tight, and not loose if you know what i mean.
Cumberland Blues
Monster of the 1st set for me. Very up..good strong back beat. Once again JK with the fender Twang that sits just perfect with this tune. This dood can play! 1st jam between lyrics is just fucking GOOD! Hell, vocals sound very good to me as well...even Philbert! Maybe my one 1/2 thumbs down here is the keys. Starts very well then it gets kinda repetitive. Reminds me quite a bit of Rob Barracco. Great outta the gate then kinda sounds like the same thing over and over. Little shakey on the ending but fuck it...the rest of the song makes up for it all day.
Ramble on Rose
I heard one small note from Bob between songs and called this to the dismay of the folks i was hanging with...LOL. Well played..strong all the way through. Good harmonies and the trade off vocals are cool with me although JK should have them all IMO. Like i said, the tune was very strong but....slow. The tempo was just a bit slower than what i wanted. This could have been a barn burner.
Foolish Heart
I have always loved the arrangement on this song. Very melodic. Each instrument has its own voice separate from all the others but they all fit together to make something beautiful. This version fits right in with most of the others ive heard. Flowing, bouncy and just nice. JK has a great range of sounds on his rig and he hit this one just right. Phil...strong on this one. Very pronounced and almost running the band. If i let myself go...this version sounds like one of many from the last years of the boys. Nice jam outta the song as well...nothing too extended but the segway into Reuben is nice.
Reuben and Cherise
This was a surprise to me.Well sung and spooky with the Jerry voice. Bobby was playing some strange shit during this song and had a few miscues that certainly didnt help things. Truthfully Phil seemed a bit off too. Once again the drummers could have helped this song out alot but just didnt seem to deliver. The song was nice to hear on a novelty level but overall wasn't a standout for me.
Dear Prudence
Bobby singing this song...Didn't see that coming but he did a nice job. Harmonies were set up like late JGB versions...anyone know who the female vocalists were? Chimenti finally plays something besides the piano and he sounds great! He is a great player on electric keys IMO. Piano...not so much. JK with the 90's jerry guitar sounds did another fine job. Great song, i was thinking with was the set ender but we got another Smile
Satisfaction
Loved this choice for a set ender. JK with the 1st few notes lit it off in good fashion and the band followed suit. Bobby once again sounded young and confident and thats the way i like to see him. Phil seemed to be enjoying the hell out of himself and kept the song strong throughout. Bobby going off on a goodlovin type vocal jam was purty cool and had the crowd a rockin for a bit. Shit...they even had some vocal echo going at one point. Good shit!
Wow...am i actually seeing this in Utica NY ?!?!?!?!?!?!?
set deuce
China Cat
Ive always loved this song and was asking for it all set break long SmileSmileSmile
Gotta say that i love the way Chimenti plays this song. Old school Pig Pen riff that i 1st caught when he was playing with the dead in whatever year that summer tour happened (im old and cant remember yesterday let alone a few years back so give me a break lol) Good strong B3ish sound throughout. Props to him. Phil really took the helm on this one IMO. Very pronounced, loud and some good bombs thrown in for good measure. JK once again trying to fill huge shoes and doing a fantastic job at it. Drummers seemed bring it this song. Maybe it was the mix in the 1st set but they sure seem to be on it at this point. Great jam out of the Cat in ....The Wheel??? wow ....nice job boys!
The Wheel
Great segway into this one. No one saw it coming from where i sat but it was welcomed for sure. Very Quintet sounding...slow melodic and then thundering the next minute. Harmonies were spot on IMO. Phil dropped some nice predator missiles into the crowd and JK did (yet again) another fine job. He has that 73' 74' sound absolutely pegged. Only downfall for me was Bobby's filling vocals at the end of the tune but he seemed to be having fun so i'll let slip on this one Smile Oh ...then came the Ryder...
I know You Ryder
At this point im lost, i turn to the old lady and say "are we in buffalo?" I was that entranced with the playing. It sounded so familiar..so 89' - 90' grateful dead that i was home again. This band really can kick out the jams like days of old IMO. Phil was just so pronounced (like always i know) and driving the shit outta these guys. I was in awe. JK tore it up like i really never thought i would hear this song played again. The entire crowd was dancing their asses off. The only slow point was the keyboards jam and it wasnt really slow just not up with the rest of the playing. Great harmonies to end this monster along with some Phil Bombs and that was fucking awesome!
Magnolia Mountain
very nice slow down after the last tune...someone tell where this song came from please. Its nice. Jerryish type ballad...slow swaying melody. JK sounds just great and takes over this tune with his playing and singing. It's him all day.
Unbroken Chain
WOW...very very well played and other than one slight miscue at the start of the tune this song was dead on. I know some folks aren't all that fond of Phil's singing abilities but i thought he did an admiral job...and it is his tune so there! I know ive been bitching a bit about Chimentie's piano playing style but it fits this song like a glove. He went to the B3 and did yet another kick ass job. He really knocked the shit outta this one. Props to him for sure. This song was the meat of the 2nd set and it did its job well. Oh yeah...and the end jam was fucking hot!
Comes a Time
Last time i heard this gem was in Buffalo 90' ( i think ) it was beautiful then and it was once again for me this night. Truthfully i heard this song coming out of Unbroken Chain during the final jam...kinda left me wondering why they didnt work right into this one but hey...who the hell am i? LOL JK's voice once again hauntingly familiar. Not quite the man but he will do in a pinch. At one time i was so against this whole "Jerry Figure" but after this song and show im pretty sure im over it. This was played in a mid 80's/90's style that really let the words hit home. Once again ...who are the female vocalists??? They sound really nice. The end jam was a bit disjointed...phil got into some idea that the rest of the band didnt seem to connect with at first but it was still good.
GDTRFB
HELL YA! Nice shuffle, upbeat, well played.Yet again it was 88'89'90' for me. Bobby sounded great on vocals and rhythm. I really think this dude should relax with the ratdog and stay with this group. He seems to be enjoying the hell out of himself and it shows in his performance IMO. Big WOW to Chimentie once again for playing his ass off. The B3 is where its at for this dude. The crowd has a nice sing along at the end and i figured this was set 2 ender but i was wrong lol.
Touch of Grey
At this point this song has taken meaning for me and anyone else that has been in the game for a bit. Bobby did a fine job with the vocals and even though it would maybe sound better with JK taking them all... the meaning of the tune with one of the core members singing is where its at. Great playing by Jeff ( yes...again) and Phil was driving the band to a nice pace for sure. The band was still firing on all cylinders at this point and i was hoping that the night would never end. Of course all good things must come to an end..onto BYGN
We Bid You Good Night
Nice to hear for sure...it had been years up to this point since ive seen one. Albany 90 something would have been the last ( i think lol ). Definitely not the best but it was fucking fun fun fun!!!!

One More Saturday Night
Seen this song a billion times and despite what a whole bunch of other folks think of it ....i have always loved this song. Its a fun one to play too BTW Smile
Great night ender IMO...after one hell of a night of music this was played with some good energy. There were a few miscues but all in all it was solid. Again...Bobby seemed to be having a good time and it showed in his performance. Some old school screaming into the mic and strong rhythm playing. I liked the fake song ending back into the song ending...pretty good stuff!
Good Morning little School Girl opener...

They do a great Magnolia Mountain and John particularly sings it beautifully. Sounds like one of those tunes that although were created by someone else would have become a Jerry classic.

really guys-
Phil's vocals are just downright bad- plain and simple-
it is one thing to deal with him when he is singing one of his songs- but when he takes off with some of the jerry tunes, i just shake my head. Bobby has some passoin in some of the stuff he does, but other times, his synchronization seems a little askew.
however, i dont really think that phil 'stole' JK from DSO- this is johns dream job and he has been waiting by the phone for years now.
great recording- thanks again to wonderful tapers!

cckowali-- I have to respectfully disagree. Listening to Dear Prudence right now, and bobby is ruining it. I mean come one man, you got a guy who has a wonderful delicate voice, great for singing jerry's songs, who loves doing and is GOOD at it. I"m sorry buy Bobby and Phil's vocals are so off that it DOES make a difference. I really don't see how being in the same band as jerry gives them any more right than JK to sing the songs--that's crazy. You don't need to feel defensive for the old men...they can still play their instruments just fine. Somebody needs to get it into Bobby's head that he should just play his songs and stop stepping on jerry's legacy. this band has such amazing potential but until they fufill that, and part of that is letting JK sing, it will be a rollercoaster ride everyshow. You might not care who sings, great, don't scold others for caring about how the music flows and sounds. excuse my ranting opinion but I'm very passionate about this. Have been following DSO for years and frankly i'm upset that phil stole JK away and now they aren't even using him to his potential.

I think this one could survive as a beautiful pairing. Bob and Phil are finally playing well on Cherise. Very similar dynamic to Foolish Heart. I like having an epic John segment as well.
Nice Recording. Thanks.

"Bobby- please resist the temptation to cover JGB covers"
"some questionable lead vocal choices (Lucy, Bird Song, phil taking diff vs. in The Weight)" comment from the 2/18 show
"It would be even better if john sang the traditional jerry songs. When Bob trys to sing them it reminds me of William Shattner spoken word" comment from 2/15 show
Honestly people who cares? Just be grateful these guys are alive and still touring. Who cares if Bobby sings a Jerry song, or Phil sings a Bobby song...who cares... they love those songs and deserve to present them to us in a manner of their choosing. If my band's leader/creator/guitar player/singer died, I'd want no one else to be singing his songs but someone from the original group. Bobby and Phil love Jerry, and love to sing his songs as we all do. Who cares if they do them justice, see the love behind the flat notes. See too old men doing what they love, and have loved for all these years.

The China Cats are getting better. Amherst was very inconsistent, sometimes rich & three dimensional, sometimes really flat. This show sounds much better overall.

Follosh and Comes a Time both sound really good. kudos to the taper. Bobby- please resist the temptation to cover JGB covers, Prudence should be JK's if you guys really have to play it.

A lot of nice surprises in this show and everything is played to perfection. Both sets are well worth your time and effort to DL. Tony did a great job taping this one. Good vibes at the venue and just an all-around great show from beginning to end
