This is a great show. I am just a listener, but I have great memories of seeing the Grateful Dead in this theater. As when Edison demonstrated the light bulb there, this place hosted many great firsts.
This was not the first Furthur show, but the tour was a coming out of a sort. I am hoping that the summer tour marks an end to repeated complaints about the role of Phil and Bob in this band. I see here a 3 star rating for this great show because Bob did a great job singing a Grateful Dead classic, which is disappointing. Also, I have seen repeated, identical posts by more than one person blasting Furthur for not being DSO...it appears to me.
What I read is that Furthur was intended to combine Further and Future. This band certainly conjures up memories of the GD for me, but this is about doing something new. I hope that posts for the summer shows demonstrate that kind of spirit. The Grateful Dead is gone, but DSO is still out there, and I hope their fans support them. Furthur is a different band.
Pointing out flaws or a bad performance is fair game here, but grousing that Furthur does not conform to DSO or GD conventions is like complaining that water is wet.

welcome all, if this was your first experience with Furthur you are veryyy lucky.. See dso all you want, but Phil and bobby bring out more from John and Jeff I had no idea you were such a wizard on the keys.. you and john need to trade licks more..
its magic. its lovely. you can tell when john is just being himself.. the smiles and the good vibes abound.. I am very very proud of the guys to put this together.. I would NOT go see the dead with Warren, I love warren, but not doing dead music. John fits this perfectly. he really is just blossoming more so I think. Its cool to hear him just being HIMSELF.. just tear it up, if you get confused.. Yeah.. thats it!!! SWEET>>>> i only saw atlanta, and the sets only get better from there.. lucky ducks of chicago.
I love you all.

having attended 4 east coast shows, i was sated. however, listening to this, i must admit that IT is happening on a different level. new potato-> st. stephen-> 11-> other one is stunning. jk hits some watery licks right before the other one which flutter through the cosmos of meditative thought until they explode into the other one. dangola! this is the real deal.
nice recording to boot.

My wife and I attended this show. I have been to every incarnation of the Band since ’95 and this is the best save maybe Hornsby. I am a Dead Head and my wife has been a willing travel companion for most of these shows. She loves the vibe, friendly crowd, and until this show, she only kind understood the connection to the music and the big picture. Welcome my wife, the newest Dead Head! This show was amazing! Their playing was tremendous! In particular Chimenti on Eyes, as well as Phil on the same song vocally, Warf Rat and So Many Roads with John brought tears, and the second set was on fire! Dare I say they were in the zone that night, the entire night! Thanks all!

I think the tour was great as well. But to suggest that the Hells angels come back you were not at enough Dead shows my friend. They were horrible people and were murders and thieves. That being said I completely agree with you that there are some bad elements on this tour(Nitrous mafia) These guys will get there do no need for the Hells angels. We are all Family in this community and will find a way to Force them out peacefully. I cant wait for the next Tour!!!

I was fortunate enough to see 7 of the shows on this tour. Thanks to my Captain Trips shirts (if you bought one thank you) Chicago was my last stop on the tour and could not have asked for a better time. The Band was on Fire especially John. He fits in so good and he really seems to bring Bobby to another level. I have seen many encarnations of the Dead since Jerry's passing and have seen the Grateful Dead 56 times. I have to say this band is the closest thing to the GD since the Grateful Dead and I will even go as far as to say that they sound better than the 94-95 Dead.
I had a such a fun time on this tour because the MUSIC was so good. The only thing i would change is maybe bring back the Hell's Angels to clean up some of the trash in the lot.

This was one of those shows that literally had the guys in the row saying, really- come on- really... It just kept coming and did not stop. I remember looking at my buddy and saying this could turn into one of those dark (and awesome) St. Stephen, Other One second sets. And boy did it. It was everything I could have imagined in my favorite venue. Please keep touring, I am still high a week later.

Subject: Emotional night for Phil
I'm listening to this show and really enjoying it and saw that an earlier reviewer who was lucky enought to attend the show noted it appeared to be a very emotional night for Phil.
I can't read too much into this but if I've counted my years right, we're coming up to the 15th anniversary of Jerry's passing (So Many Roads playing right now). Chicago (Soldier's Field) was the last venue the Grateful Dead ever played at and maybe this added to the emotion of the evening.
Phil and Bob are amazing. Phil's pushing 70 and Bob's voice has sounded great on the shows posted fro this tour. And there will never be another Jerry Garcia, John Kadelcik vocal range somewhat resembles the younger Garcia's voice and he is more than passable guitarist.
I am really enjoying these guys for what they are and hope that I might catch them sometime soon.

My friends and I were fortunate (lucky) enough to be at this show. I hadn't felt a vibe like what was running through that place in many years! It felt like a revival meeting to me. You just knew you were seeing something special. I've seen a lot of shows over the many years since the Grateful Dead and usually always left with a smile, but on this night I left with a grin, and it had been way too long since that had happened. Thank you to all the audience there that night that helped make it happen. Big Thanks to the tapers who capture the moment that any SBD simply can't do. But most of all, Thank you to the band who were phenomenal and gave all they could give!

I was NOT on board for this tour, but I will NOT miss FURTHUR this summer.I feel that this band has made incredible strides in a short period of time & the best is yet to come. If this is how Bob & Phil finish their careers, I can see that this band will yet recapture a whole other generations of fans & re kindle the TRUE SPIRIT of the Grateful Dead music as a whole.
Thanks to the tapers.

Okay fellow Luddites, if you download the Zip file and have Windows and it doesn't work, you have to download Winamp (see Archives Help) and then Google Flac Winamp and download the Flac thing. I can't 'splain it more cause I learn by butting my poor head against the wall of technology all the time. Keep trying, it's worth it!

It's the third day since the show and I can't get it out of my head! I didn't think we'd see anything this magical again. By the way, Jay Lane WAS distracted -- after the encore he came on the stage and introduced us all to his birth sister (he was adopted, apparently), whom he met for the first time that day! That's the kind of magic I'm talking about. Check out Phil's comments in the Donor Rap.

I was at both Chicago shows, and the band sounds great. The Auditorium Theatre is a great place to see a show, although I cant speak for those on the 4th balcony that looked very high. I was lucky enough to be in a great location for both nights. We all should feel lucky that these guys are still traveling around providing great music. The Congress Hotel right across from the theater was a great spot to hangout before and after the shows.
The one thing that really distracted me was watching Jay Lane. He seemed completely uninterested in the show on the second night. There were moments where he was actually behind his drums like during slipknot, but I watched him countless times just walk away. Everyone else was playing their heart out the entire time. Maybe he was distracted by other issues or ate something that took him away from the show, but there are a lot of drummers out there who would love to have his opportunity to play with these guys, it should be appreciated. I hate to sound like a complainer, because the shows both nights were great. I just found this distracting.

I was right next to this taper, so I am interested to hear what this sounds like. Where we were, the sound quality was pretty good, so this stream should be good.
As far as the show goes... Well, I am one of those kids who was too young to see the grateful dead, so my frame of reference is kinda messed up. With that said, this show was effin incredible. I've seen dead incarnations since the other ones. I have seen many variations of "Dead". This was hands down the greatest show I have ever seen! Energy was high, songs couldn't have been better if I'd picked them myself, crowd was super chill too.
Only complaint was about getting in. What was the deal at the door? Made me mad!!!
This show is worth the listen!

Per the tapers notes off Etree :
" It's a shame because I was clamped onto the front of the balcony and it came out great.
I believe I was the only one up there both nights. Last night my seat turned out to be great for taping. It was close to center and about 10-12 rows back. I was able to tape my stand to the railing next to the entry tunnel to the lower balcony seats."

My friend and I traveled to these 2 Chicago shows and words can't describe how good they were....particularly the 3/3 show. I am 27 years old and never got to see the Grateful Dead, so all my opinions are based on seeing "post-Jerry" projects (e.g P&F, Ratdog, Other Ones, Dead 03, 04, 09, etc) That being said....
This is the best concert I've ever seen. The band was on absolute fire in Chicago and feeding off the incredible energy. I can go into details of every song, but the setlist speaks for itself. Phil seemed very emotional all night and the 2nd set was clearly his masterpiece.
There will be lots of comparisons to Jerry and the Grateful Dead in concert reviews following this tour, but I hope most people ignore these. Just appreciate the band for what they are: great rock and roll.
Go see Furthur.

Holy shit I have been waiting to see a show like this! The first set smoked start to finish and the second was just as nice. Even the Johny be good was the best I ever heard! The only thing I didn't like was leaving knowing my home stereo will never reproduce that experience! Hope when the stream comes in its a good one! One of the tapers said I was in a sweet spot (sure was). I been wanting a psychedelic masterpiece and last years chicago did not cut it. NO LET DOWN HERE!

I was at this show last night and it was totally off the hook! Cant wait to hear a replay. They definately worked hard to make up for the not so grate previous night that had some bright spots but mostly seemed to be peppered with all sorts of tech. issues and generally did not gel well at any point. This show on the other hand was unbelievable start to finish and I cant see how they will be able to out do it but I hope they try. If your not on board this tour dont wait any longer sell all you own if you have to and buy a ticket! This was definatly the best of the 100+ shows I have seen since Jerrys death and probably better than a few of my 60 Grateful Dead shows.
