Subject: A Young Heads first Furthur show/ Magical
Subject: A Young Heads first Furthur show/ Magical
I'm 17 years old and have only been into this magical band (The Grateful dead as a whole) for about 2 years now. I first got introduced by a Lesh and friends/Ratdog show that I scored free tickets to.
Since then I've become something of a diehard, I can truly say that this music has captured my soul and will never let go.
Anyway, this was my first time seeing Furthur and it was definitely nothing short of magical. JK, Phil, Bob, larry campbell and the backup musicians all seemed to be in the essence this night.
Surely Jerry was looking down on this huge gathering of folks in his honor with a big smile. There were clear skies for each night and I'm pretty sure the big man got a good look from way up there.
Now to the show: Of course hearing Beauty in it's entirety was a real treat. Great to hear he old stuff. The Ripple with Campbell on Mandolin was nice, as was the truckin'. Candyman was swinging and beautiful as well.
However, the real highlight of this show was the New Speedway> Cumberland Blues > Black Peter > Easy Wind (with a solid Casey to close the set) This was nothing short of a hard-hitting roots-rock punch in the face, and it delighted the hell out of me. Kadlecik's wild solos and the tight rhythms on these classic Dead blues rock tunes really did it for me. Pure and Great.
In short, this show was a blast from start to finish. Download it, listen, enjoy, and hope for many more to come from the boys. This music is pure gold and these guys are giving somebody like me (I was 2 yrs old when Jerry passed) a chance to experience the magic and love.

When i first saw the setlist to these shows i did'nt think anything of it, then i came across them again a few days later and put it all together and had to listen.
The box opener is spot on and phil sounds youthful as ever here, sadly the meat of the show does not come till set 3. But before that the box, till the morning comes, truckin, speedway cumberland and easy wind are all nice and well played versions. As far as JK sounding like garcia, maybe some of the chords he plays, positivly the tone he uses, but his voice sounds nothing like jerry. Not even close.
Not a bad show but there are much better shows by this band out there. Worth the DL if you were there or just have to have everything.
the sound on these are nice once the sound person gets everyone dialed in.

While there's something special the open shows with morphs into the next tune and the pleasant satisfaction that comes with recognizing the new tune, hearing the Grateful Dead, oops, I meant Furthur, play these albums [Sat: American Beauty, Workingman's Dead, Anthem of the Sun; and Sun: Blues for Allah, Aoxomoxoa, and Terrapin Station)over the two nights was a real throwback and treat to their great music of the late 60's and early 70's, especially after Friday's jam session which rocked the house: [The Eleven> Eyes Of The World> Dark Star > Bird Song> Loose Lucy> Dear Mr. Fantasy> Scarlet Begonias> Fire On The Mountain> Let It Grow> Unbroken Chain Standing On The Moon>
Playing In The Band> back to Dark Star
E: Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad]. 8 hours of music in three nights!
After reading other posted comments, I wanted to add one thing. In 1985, I got on the bus at the ripe age of 24. While I too am saddened Jerry is no longer around, for those Deadheads that are still stuck in the past claiming Jerry's gone and nobody is as good (The Dead, Furthur), well boo hoo. Even Jerry had his off nights.
This version of the Dead is playing THE MUSIC that we all love. BEING IN THE MUSIC is what it's about and this band is providing that for us. Granted, Kadlecik is not Jerry and Chimenti is not Godchaux or Mydland. Good for them and good for Furthur. Russo was hot though I do want to see Mickey and Bill join back in. By the way, Kadlecik's instrumental's are excellent and definitely capture the essence. Not to take anything away from Haynes but I think Furthur has found their lead. And I don't know if Kadlecik has had an off night yet.
I just hope these guys rock on for another 10 years (Lesh @ 80?!) and will Be IN and enjoy every note played.

Thanks for the great recording! Did you happen to catch any of the "sound check" set they did on Friday, or the killer all-star jam that happened inside on Friday night? I would be so grateful for a copy of that amazing rotating jam.

What a great weekend! Can't wait to hear it again! I have trouble opening the files once I download them, they will not unzip...anyone have any idea how to fix this? I have had this problem on a few of the archive shows I've downloaded (but have been successful with plenty of them)...

I wasn't there, but I think they sound really good. I read an interview a long time ago (I've seen about 100 shows) where Jerry said they had good shows and bad shows. This is definitely one of the best. It is such high energy. Like the guy wrote on the video on You Tube "pure unadulterated joy". Five stars, of course!

I agree with kneadles. Would love the acoustic stuff. The Dark Hollow Stage was the perfect place to hang out all afternoon. Great sets by Jemima Puddleduck, Dan Bern & Common Rotation, Hot Tuna and the weekend's MVP, Larry Campbell & his wife Teresa Williams--check out Larry's scorching lead early in Cumberland Blues.
This is a great sounding recording of a wonderful performance, by the way.

Absolutely fantastic recording. Great Job!
Like the other reviewer, would love to hear friday night too. And if anyone has any copies of or knows how to get a hold of the acoustic stuff with jackie greene, jorma, phil and his son, that would be fun to listen to as well.

spent all weekend spinning with the spinners. I hope somebody posts 5-28-10 because I thought that show was the truly outstanding night. The album concept was "ok," but I think it will get tired if we have to put up with it over and over and over and over.. get back to real shows! and post 5-28-10!!!
