GalanjahBell Jam an' Irielan' (October 23, 2006)

A collection of acoustic roots reggae songs written in Belgium and Ireland, recorded one evening at The Green Ark (Alan's music room) in Motueka, Aotearoa/New Zealand. These songs have primarily evolved through extensive busking, so the idea was to try to create the organic atmosphere of a busking session (without all the distractions and noise of a shopping street).

Alan 'Galanjah' de Boeck - vocals, guitar, percussion
Matthew - saz, handclaps
Helen - recorder, melodica, vocals, percussion
Saan - vocals, percussion
Ras Levi - vocals, percussion
Ras Judah - vocals, percussion
Alex - percussion

All songs (not chants) by Alan: 2-5 written in Belgium, 6-16 written in Ireland.

Spoken word tracks (6 and 13) recorded sometime earlier with JohnJohn (from Wiggle) playing bass during his visit to Aotearoa.

Track 16 is not "lame", that's the Flemish "lah-may" (the lyrics involve baffling Flemish wordplay, or even 'syllable-play', according to Alan). The song drifts into The Wailers' "Lick Samba".

All recorded on MiniDisc and later edited by Matthew.

Galanjah can be heard DJ'ing reggae selections regularly on Fresh FM (which now has a web-stream).

More details coming soon.

Subject: long breedings...good chicks!
Being part of the making of the kid that wrote the lyrics and improvised the busking Rasta tunes and witnessing the making of this in The Green Ark studios, Place des Coppins, Motueka, Aotearoa...

...as well as participating in the NZ Treewalk 2006, the ultimate buzz and vibe creator for the recordings, so greatly inspired by Matthew 'Jah Tune' Watkins...

Rastafari!

And listening to the music?

Depending the mood of the moment, I really like the awkward mix of rasta busk punk music...

...and some tracks are quite catching!

blessings,
Papa

Good stuff, very happy to have been part of it (even if my saz playing is embarassingly dominant). A lovely crew of people to make music with.

Don't forget to sing *into* the mic next time, tho', Alan!
