Henry LowoodGame Capture: Archives of Multiplayer Game Worlds (2008)

"The history of multiplayer game worlds and virtual realities can be told with reference to a variety of documentary sources.

Players find the most compelling "proof" of a memorable event or claimed exploit in visual documentation captured from actual gameplay: Screenshots or, even better, video recordings of the actual events.

"Game Capture" glimpses moments from multiplayer games and virtual worlds through screenshots and video grabbed (and sometimes edited) by and for players." -- from the introduction to the video.

"Game Capture: Archives of Multiplayer Game Worlds" was created for the "online games" section of the Game On exhibition put on by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne, from 6 March through 13 July 2008. This roughly 9-minute short is composed entirely of historical screenshots and captured video from the history of virtual worlds and on-line games. It was curated by Henry Lowood, with sound and video editing by Henrik Bennetsen, both from the How They Got Game group of the Stanford Humanities Lab, Stanford University.

Note that the file titled "acmi_game_capture" is the video shown at the ACMI; the file titled "httg_game_capture" includes a little bit of additional material and thus represents a kind of "director's cut."
