Bill Graham presents "The San Francisco Scene in Toronto". Other
artist(s): Jefferson Airplane ; Luke And The Apostles.
One looking at the concert poster (which can be see at the following):
< http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/2635/jcards/ja_4.jpg > can determine:
There were shows from 31st July to 5th August according to the poster, ("evenings at 8.30, matinees on Wednesday and Saturday") which would mean a total of 8 shows [Mon. 7/31, Tues. 8/1, Weds. 8/2 matinee, 8/2 evening, Thurs.
8/3, Fri. 8/4, Sat. 8/5 matinee, 8/5 evening].
David Sorochty:
"Before New Potato Caboose Jerry says "This is a song called New Potato Caboose, don't you know". Viola Lee Blues goes into a short Feedback and cuts off right near the very end, just as Jerry and then Pigpen start playing the
Merry-Go-Round Broke Down (Looney Tunes) melody. A silly kind of ending to an intense song".
RECORDINGS 30 SB. Master reel > 1 reel generation > DAT > circulation. Most tapes in circulation are missing the fragmentary (cuts in and has two splices in it) Lindy.
3. Commonly circulates with 8/5/67. I've created separate md5 and info text files for each.

This Soundboard Runs Fast
I have to add my two cents to all three of these uploads. To my ears, New Potato and Viola Lee run fast. I couldn't tell you what the percentage is. But to me, it's plain as day. And nobody else notices it? Hmm. The duo is five stars after audio correction.

The Grateful Dead: Show #187
Nothing too interesting about this show except that it's show 6 of an 8 night run at the O'Keefe Center (some took place on the same date at different times).
Lindy's missing, but no big deal... We're left with New Potato and a 20 minute Viola>Feedback. First Feedback I believe I've seen on Archive. Well on our way to Space... Here we come.

Interesting Snapshot
A hometown show a few years before I was born. too bad I couldn't be there.
A great performance shows the band developing into the well-oiled jamming machine they were to become. Flashes of brilliance in Jerry's playing as his style was developing. Phil also puts in a great performance.
Btw, The O'Heefe Centre still exists. The name changed to the Hummingbird Centre and then to the Sony Centre (corporate sponsorship, you know).

Dear Quibbling Commenter
Differentiating between the live versions of Viola Lee in 1967 and 1968 is very silly indeed. This is an awesome version, awesomely recorded and every time I hear it my big toe shoots up in my boot. These Canadian tapes are some of the most intense Grateful Dead recordings out there. Listen to them. Love them.

Spots of brilliance, but not consistent; Excellent New Potato
Some good moments of psychedelic jamming in Viola Lee Blues, but also sections where Jerry seems to get stuck. There are several better Viola Lee's from 1966 and 1967 here at
Archive.org.
This was back when New Potato Caboose was new, as this is one of the first performances. Of the two songs here, New Potato is the better. Jerry is in the zone with Phil and Pigpen, and Bob turns in a nice vocal.
Viola Lee is a 3, New Potato a 5.
