Subject: the cards ain't worth a dime,, if you don't lay them down
Missing Don't Ease,,
Cold Rain, just keeps chugging along since 1965
Good lead vocals on Truckin' Weir firmly entrenched at mic
Great jam inside the Truckin which builds in intensity
Sugar Magnolia gives Weir another crack at Front-man
All the harmonies in Sugar Mag are probably why the wife banishes me to the headphones with just a look.
but dig Garcia's backing vocals, Weir too
they dropped a lot of that over the top stuff over time
but it is pretty swell here!
Wrong Doing Woman- the boys needed PIG
He is the glue in keeping it a tight outfit.
The guy responsible for the getting down vibe
Can't be overstated in 1970
Me & My Uncle-amazing how this tune sounds different depending on when and where it appears in the set.
After the Pig tune it is steady going with Weir out ahead vocally.
Drumz coming out of nowhere with a real looseness straight into Good Lovin' -Rhythm section is so busy here just crushing it.
Pig is Master of Ceremonies, He has Bobby under his wing
A little on the job training-
more drumming, they didn't take much chances in the later years as far as drumming went mainly it was
all packaged into Drumz>Space
but here they cut loose with the band still on stage.
Exceptions to this of course abound
Samson Intro's
Wheel intro's
Could just be that this is integral to the show.
and it makes me smile because this is the early show
Don't want to overthink it
one of the problems with reviews
is at times they get like sitting next to someone who is talking during the jams
They just kick ass on those drums!
I am feeling the door back to Good Loving but no rather Cumberland, how sweet to have Cumberland just appearing anywhere at anytime during the set.
There was that brief period when Brent seemed to bring the Cumberland back, it was perfect for his high octane keyboard.
My thinking is if you were fortunate to get both the early and late shows for these two nights you got a pretty good taste of where the band was at.
Does it really matter where this ranks in the 1970's?
as far as I am concerned it is all light years ahead of almost all the shows I saw in the 80's and 90's
but I wouldn't trade those shows
It was great not always easy street
seeing and being on tour.
Just hope you enjoyed whatever you saw.
If you saw the greatest show
and it sucked in your mind
where does that leave you?
I love how they couldn't let that Good Lovin' go
came back for it and just blow it out.
Great intro to Casey Jones as the set closer.
The Band really understood that speaking was pretty much secondary to Jamming
So even when they took to bantering
it has a flow to it
soothing instead of hassling
THE ENGINE JUST GLEAMS...
Late Show opens with PIG all over a SMOKESTACK opener
Pig on Harp, somebody on the slide
Great tune out of the gate
Hope some of those early show folks got themselves situated.
This is really nice,, Good tribute to PIG when Bobby would roll this out usually like Trucking>Smokestack.
They sound like they are going to let it wind down
Not keep stepping with it
fade it out
BIODTL-again the harmonies are kind like Pig & Phil
drummers prominent in the mix
China>Rider-just drop it mid set why don't you
to my mind never sure how Garcia could sing China Cat
and play at the same time seem like contrary paradigms
FOTD at the full gallop,,,Only the GD could shelve one of their most intriquing tunes and then bring it back as a stretched out slowed down tempo ballad.
Only other person I ever saw do something like that was Bob Dylan doing a slam dance version of Shelter from the Storm.
Truckn-They played it early show
can I compare them?
Not sure I want too
This seems a little more deliberate
and less in your face on Weir's vocals
Harmonies during Sweet Jane!!!
The jam on the Late Show Truckin' is a bit bluesier
maybe not as out and out psychedelic
sounds like they could have stretched it out more
but decide to stay within the framework of the tune
back into the final lyrics.
Candyman-always welcomed
Garcia's voice-Wow!
This is just a deep number
With this and the Smokestack can't go wrong..
and then Pig up's the ante with a harp led Hurts me Too
Just gonna listen from here on out
May God bless and keep you always...
A LITTLE BIT HIGHER!!!
