Notes
--converted original files (gd1971-12-05.sbd.unknown.18665.sbeok.shnf) to .wav files bit rate 14H kbps / 44 khz,
retracked, tagged and fixed every track transition in the first set and almost every track transition in the second set -
All done with crossfades (minus the tracks that naturally segue into each other) and did numerous volume adjustments and little edits
to make everything much less jarring and more listenable.
Also created better fade in / outs at the beginning and ending of each set and added the patches from
Charlie Miller's Master Reel source.
A Big Thank you to Charlie Miller for his fine work that inspired my own - Love this show and loved working on it!

Subject: A big hit in Turlock- TRUCKIN'
and coming from Florida
we started asking folks
as soon as we crossed the Cali line
"Where's Turlock?"
We couldn't find anyone who had even heard of Turlock until we got to Merced on the 99.
Anyhow, To my knowledge the closest the Dead ever played to Turlock was Modesto.
They had a TURLOCK running joke for a few years,
and during Europe 72 tour.
I personally liked the farming vibe of the town.
Nothing cooler than driving the back roads
with the trees in full bloom.
First time i had ever seen such an extensive canal system. (bringing water in from the Mountains)
There was a very large Assyrian Christian community that had faced severe persecution from 'the religion of peace' in the Middle East.
Also at one time TURLOCK had the most churches per person in the entire U.S.A.
This show is excellent. You still have that old school GD swagger. I am not going to camp out on every tune.
Suffice it to say, the boys were giving you good return on your ducat investment. And just imagine tuning this on your radio December 5. 1971 in the WNEW listening area.
New York City in December was a really great place to be with both Christmas and Chanukah brightening up the town and making for a great festive atmosphere.
I do want to comment on the Dark Star>Me & My Uncle>Dark Star>Sitting
The Star is almost blues oriented to start then gets spacey in a hurry then drops into Weir's vocals for Me & My Uncle and back to a jam and then a little free form and then a full on meltdown jam- unique and good stuff
The SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD is already a rarity by this time and Europe 72 is all she wrote for this 'Big River' rifted tune.
So much music here probably two shows worth of material for a show in the later years.
Only thing i ever saw in the Felt Forum was like a smaller circus (Not Ringling) because i saw Ringling at MSG.
Anyway when i was going to Dead shows at MSG in the 80's.I always kept an eye out for Felt Forum signs but don't ever remember seeing even one.
The Dead are a great example
of how we are de-evolving.
Yes, our technology maybe crisper
but we are not the equals of our fathers
and Grandfathers
and your kids, kid, rock n roll
does not hold a candle to the Good Ol' Grateful Dead.
Weir and Pig on the NFA that is smokin'
The fella's hanging out on the park bench in Astoria, Queens would crank this show on the boom box for many years until there was no one left anymore smoking, joking and carrying on. "Gone are the days"..
Subject: Legendary show .... mix?
I like this version, a decent attempt to smooth out some rough spots in the mix. I would love to hear what a good a mastering guru could do with this mix... it could really benefit from some serious mid slide stereo correction... I don't know if that's really possible but it's plagued with weird stereo imaging...
However, it's a really cool show and the GD deliver a inspired East Coast performance with Bill Graham at the helm of promoting since the closure of the Fillmore East. It sounds like the GD are really enjoying playing this show. This show sounds like they finally are traveling to that special sound of 1972. Like many of you out there I first heard parts of this show from a few bootleg LP's - this is far better - a great performance for sure, well worth a listen and download ...
