This was booked/promoted as Garcia & Friends. But like 3/23, the friends he brought were the Dead. A memorial/benefit for the family of a local artist, both Kingfish and Keith & Donna opened, so the full Dead portion had to be a bit shorter. Still, these were their first full sets of the year, and they premiered four songs. Though this was the "hiatus year", it had only been 8mos since they had played their farewell show here at Winterland; but they would not play it again for nearly two years. Legion of Mary [Garcia / Saunders / Kahn / Fierro] played the next night at nearby Great American Music Hall (did you ever get a C90 trade that had LoM filler?). After two benefit appearances, the next show (as Grateful Dead) was an invite-only industry showcase. On this night they presented more work-in-progress from the upcoming album. It's mostly non-aggressive and set-way-back, showing what coming off the road, dismantling the cumbersome, profit-gouging Wall of Sound, and focusing on outside projects did for the mood. Aside from the incredible 8/13 show, the other '75s (two, including the other Garcia & Friends) are about the same as this - some great stuff, some rusty and some experimentation (I'd rank this 3rd of the 4).
First Set. Note that Graham carefully does not introduce them as Grateful Dead. This is the first ever Crazy Fingers, and a rare case where a premier is woodshedded and ready for prime time. In the fall of '76 it would reach over 15mins; this is the first one and it's already nearly 10mins. A lot of what makes it great is Keith's original keys. The AUD is preferable as it doesn't have all the edits and speed wobbles. On the focused and hot Beat it On Down the Line-15, the Tobin MTX is better, because Phil is turned up and down on the SBD. Deal dials it down - to a bit lifeless, actually (AUD still better; Phil is distorted on SBD). Note that it's Donna-less; probably because she had already sung for a whole set. The next show has possibly the best version ever of Big River, but the genesis of that one is here (and the SBD is settled now). Peggy-O is wayyy downtempo and draggy as a lethargic sloth, but Jer throws down three solos and the last is nice. Oops, guess Me & My Uncle was NOT woodshedded. Help on the Way is the first one, but lyrics had not yet been penned. Partway the SBD goes mono. Slipknot! is naturally the first as well. There is plenty of feeling around tentatively, and it hadn't solidified from a loose jam yet. Jer would have lots more ideas for this in a year. Partway the SBD goes back to stereo. Franklin's is also the first one, and by the end of next year it would surpass 17mins. A definite work-in-progress vibe.
Second Set. Blues for Allah has no lyrics yet. All three versions sound different. This, the second one, goes into a fine Sand Castles & Glass Camels @3:21. This is the second (of four) of Phil's King Solomon's Marbles. Some setlists call it "Stronger than Dirt or Milkin' the Turkey" but Mickey had not yet written the StD/MtT stop-start riff section, which premiered on 8/13. This set actually goes: Blues for Allah>Sand Castles & Glass Camels>Drums>King Solomon's Marbles>Sand Castles & Glass Camels>Unusual Occurrences in the Desert>Sugar Mag>U.S. Blues. Unusual Occurrences is @2:35 in the second "Blues for Allah" (which is the second SC&GC). It does not have it's "under eternity" lyrics yet either (though they did "sing" this section in the 3/23 show). Sugar Mag is downtempo and a little rusty in the 6mos since; the only one of '75. U.S. Blues is like an average '74.
1st Set: C+
2nd Set: B+
Overall = 3½ stars
Highlights:
Crazy Fingers - unusually good for a premiere
Beat it On Down the Line - focused
Big River - detailed playing
Blues for Allah>Sand Castles & Glass Camels - all of these sound different
King Solomon's Marbles>Unusual Occurrences - rare space-jazz Dead
SOURCES: The motb_97077 is the Bob Menke (best) AUD. The bertrando_dalton_sirmick_miller_fixed is the Bertrando AUD with the pitch corrected. The 145779_sbd is a somewhat muddy, portion of the SBD. The GEMS_96125 is the most complete SBD and best sounding, but it runs slightly fast, needing -1% pitch correction.

Some sound issues during Crazy Fingers, also Donna not singing on this version.
BIODTL-Very good and like to hear Jerry and Donna on backing vocals.
This version of PEGGY O just does not stand up to the early versions of this tune. It losses something with the slower pace.
It is pretty cool to hear an instrumental HELP ON THE WAY.
There are some major blown lyrics throughout the show by both Bob and Jerry.
With that said the creativity of the jams is very nice. Also like the ensemble singing towards the end of Franklin's.
Length wise Not a very long show.
The Second Set is shorter than stuff from the 90's
Any Dead is better than no Dead.
And in 1975 Dead shows were scarce.
So WAVE THAT FLAG
WAVE IT WIDE AND HIGH...
Subject: Holy Phil!
Subject: Dead in 75
Subject: Sweet spot...
And while this show has some spectacular moments, its clearly not up to par with the other three shows that circulate from 1975, both in sound quality and precision...
