As one of the three or four most-collected and beloved shows, a full description is sort of pointless. It has the first Estimated, the first Terrapin, and is the first show following the Cow Palace NYE. If the tunings are removed, it's actually not a very long show (and note that there is no Drums!), but the thing about this show is that all players are so focused on adding to the fabric. It's also a weathervane for the upcoming year.
First Set. Having woodshedded the relatively complex Terrapin, they get it out of the way first. It would move around in the sets for a while after this, and as more parts were written they were attempted (and discarded). Bobby only played the opening riff this way a few times before switching to an easier riff in the same position (on the 10th fret). It sounds as fresh as it is, and more angular than just two months later (it gets tighter and more powerful in April). Believe it or not, it's the low point of the set. Minglewood teeters deliciously. After a solid They Love Each Other comes the premiere of Estimated. It too has been woodshedded and tightened; it too quickly became a monster [see 5/15 & 5/28]. Much of the appeal for this one is the early, short-lived arrangement and lyrics and, unusually, Keith playing a Polymoog. The first 6secs or so were not recorded on the SBD, and are patched with the AUD. However the OFF substitutes the beginning with 12/30/77. This is a superb Sugaree. It has a missing section @6:56, but the AUD is so good that patches are congruous [the OFF patches with 19secs from 6/8/77]. Mama Tried & Deal are absolute parfait, and Playing is one of the year's best. After a big-sounding The Wheel, the Playing reprise is tempered for a '77.
Second Set. Samson is a dynamic, ultra version. Even is you tire of Tennessee Jed, this has so much detail that you'll be chuffed. Note how Jer starts the end solo quietly to let other elements build first, before laying down one of the greatest TJ passages. There are incredible sections throughout Music Never Stopped and Help on the Way. Slipknot! is one of a kind and an all-time-best candidate. Franklin's isn't a top ten for the year, with it's flubbed verses, but the playing compensates. 22secs are missing @3:42, and the patch is not complete on the 151834_Betty or 152023_remaster (it's complete on the MTX and the AUD). It is unpatched on the OFF. Note that after Promised Land St. Stephen is teased but was not played until the next two shows. Eyes of the World is a fabulous version, with a Phil bonus, taking the lead on the end jam. For the era, it's up there with 12/31/76 & 5/15. There's a great seg into Dancing, and right when you think it's gonna bog it alights with rotating spirals throwing off sparks. It has one of the best-ever Dancing jams. Around & Around has a 29sec cut @5:50 [it's patched on the MTX, the wizard_32009 and the 152023_remaster, but left cut on the OFF]. Its speed-up section is great, but they've lost the momentum when they return for the downtempo encore, though the solo is decent.

SOURCES: The 152023_remaster is the restored, upgraded SBD. Though it is mostly patched, some tunings are trimmed. They are complete on the excellent Seamons matrix (bertrando_110037), however its channels are switched [as they are on previous SBDs]. Along with a Betty Board, we are also lucky to have a very listenable AUD (bertrando_110231). Some previously listed sources have blips in Half Step or Dew, have an incomplete Drums, or are missing Minglewood. Most of the show is on Dave's 29, though 15mins of tunings have been cut from the first set, sections at the beginning of Estimated and middle of Sugaree have been replaced, and Franklin's and Around & Around are edited (have cuts).
