Subject: Best AUD for this show
Subject: Best AUD for this show
Of the available Audience tapes for this show, I highly recommend this one. The other two are a bit too thin or shaky sounding, a little too Tin Can and wobbly. I will always seek out an AUD (Audience) Recording before the sterile SBD and especially a FOB AUD as they tend to sound the most full and alive, and this one doesn’t disappoint. As the other review mentions, it could be remastered. But the recording itself is nice.

Subject: The Natural sound...
Hey GD folks ... this is a cool recording , don't play it too loud but at nominal level it's very impressive ! ... it's a FOB , "front of board" for the folks who don't know that means... a place in the concert hall where tapers would find the sweet spot on the floor usually in "front of the soundboard" or the "front of house" as we say today ... The Shure SM-57 is probably the most used microphone in the sound industry ... a completely passive (no battery or phantom power 48v) Tom Petty used one for vocals for a long time ... it was the Mic used for the US President press conferences until Walker Bush ... Bear used the SM-57 to reference the PA sound on a few November 1972 sets; he also used the SM57's in 1970 with one overhead and one on the bass drums for the dual drum sets
They are not expensive and are commonly the go to mic for electric guitar cabinets and snare drums HOWEVER they can yield a very nice sound simply with a two channel stereo application... this show captures that dynamic ... This tape isn't perfect but what I like is the presence a real nice almost broadcast quality natural "warm" sound... there is nice low end ... you can hear the instruments, drums and vocals clearly ... there is the occasional close hand clap and crowd cheer but it really is at minimum ... mostly .. I LIKE NICE CLEAR CYMBALS ...
Again, this source could be mastered with some nice mid slide placement and EQ , at times there is some phase but I really want to know if the GD were using a stereo PA, kinda sounds like it at times... the show is spot on for a 1977 show ... many folks will flock to the soundboard which is cool too and maybe a good matrix will be there but this source stands on it's own ...
