Mind's Eye
Don't think for a second that anything from the fabled year of nineteen seventy-seven can produce anything lackluster. Nay, powerless - by the Grateful Dead.
This show came smack in the middle of their eight show Autumn southwest tour, which took them from Tempe, Arizona (October 6th) and ending in Baton Rouge (October 16th). The best parts of these shows are culled together on Road Trips Vol. 1 No. 3 for those interested. Where as many have been sought and contextualized as better than nothing's hidden away in Dick's Picks Vol. 29. Although, I believe a lot of this is overlooked because Englishtown (November 3rd, 1977) happened so thoroughly.
To cap it all off, the following week during their East coast Autumn tour would capture them in another syncopated extremely well-curated series of shows. 10/29 and 11/4 both postulate that nothing would ever come close to the riot that was the Grateful Dead.
Stadium shows and University tours in 1978 would go on to further explain that what they achieved on the aforementioned Fall tours in 1977 were sacred, especially now among the limitless Flac-trading communities of Now. I consider myself lucky to be able to hear these in startling quality, back-to-back whenever I'd like. Who is to say when and where these actually happened, although I am grateful to know (maybe) they did.
Back to the music at hand. What is shown here is above or slightly better than most of what can be heard. The opening trilogy Help/Slip/Franklin should not be missed, as well as the Dancin' In The Streets melody DIRE WOLF AND LET IT GROW. It's fire, absolute trench town Reggae. You won't regret a single moment if you ever could.

this show rips. best night of this tour so far imo. keith, bobby n phil all shine thruout. jer n donna both have sum rough patches but overall excellent performances. excellent set list. peggy-o, dire wolf, estimated, eyes, dancin, nfa are all some of my favs of 1977 to this point chronologically. thought id miss keiths moog on estimated but the epiano sounds so dope snd his playing is phenomenal tonight. also keith, phil and bobbys chemistry on estimated is un real and then check out bobby n jerry on the dancin jam. also i think second set opener dancin is kinda rare placement? i think it was mostly late first set/set closer.
anyways great show. def worth a good listen.
