Opening up the show with something old, that would become some new on the new album some six months later, gets things off to a fun start.
The band next gets serious with Cassidy...how many times have they played this as the second song? Well they did played it two more times in the third slot this tour :) But over their career I am sure not many. Now you can hear Phil digging deep and really make his presence know. Jerry's new guitar "Tiger" is sounds super as well, as he really is at the beginning of a new era for his guitar playing.
A majestic Peggy-O features Jerry and Phil leading the charge and the outcome is a perfect rendition. It is clear this band is not looking in the rear view mirror as they play with both passion and high energy.
The rest of the set just keeps getting better as they span the catalog with classic tunes and raising the ante at every turn. From BE Women to Deal it is a barn burner. The band has been rehearsing with new member Brent and it is musically clear this band is hear to play.
Set II is really has some exceptional playing. The Shakedown is funked out excellence with Brent on the Moog, too bad he did not stick with it, and then an explosive, Phil is simply a monster on this one, Passenger. This version is quite fierce and one heck of a ride, as Bobby is in total rock start mode.
Jerry next lays down a poetic FOTD, to let everyone catch their breaths and a nod back to second sets from a couple years earlier.
Estimated is a real treat and the band, including Bobby, completely soar as they are all fully engaged. The jam is more focused and rocking rather than spacey as they were a short time in the past. The familiar transition into a high octane and extremely fast tempo Eyes of the World is well received and well played, but is too fast for my preferences but what comes out of it is a complete revelation!
After they start to end the song and it seems like drums is inevitable Phil just starts playing like it is 1974! Jerry is total up for it as well. Phil is just pounding away on Big Brown and then starts getting some feedback as well, which vibrates through the entire coliseum, Jerry is supporting this by just running scales in the back ground while Bob makes some cool bird like sounds. Billy and Mickey are along for the ride as well and then Phil just starts taking over!
I mean with Earth shattering notes. Wow! It's incredible! This night may have been the birth place of the modern era of the Phil bombs, although I have to say he may have never played quite like this ever again.
Drums is wild as Phil has completely thrown the deck of cars up in the air. Toward the beginning of space it almost sounds like Mickey is playing some type of vocal like percussion instrument that almost sounds Tibetan.
Phil picks up right where he left off and you get a couple more minutes of cool soundscapes before Jerry drops into a gorgeous Stella Blue, as he must've been thinking it was 1974 too. Phil get completely into it and drops a few more very sweet bombs and is with Jerry at every glorious note. This version is quite good and has a wonderful peak before a thunderous start to a rollicking Good Lovin' to end the set... a short but very sweet post space segment.
They close out night two with a rocking US Blues, in which Phil drop one more bomb when Jerry sings " I'll drink your health, share your wealth, run your life, steal your wife."
This source is not good as from other nights on this tour, I believe there are only two sources of this little know gem, but it does have full bass and great mids too, it's just alittle shy on the high end.
Happy trails!
