Subject: Dr. Bob & Charlie Strike again!
Subject: Dr. Bob & Charlie Strike again!
This remastering of this amazing show is a must have for your external hard drive. You can download it here or join CM's new FB page-where he is posting all of his recent work.
The night starts off in " typical" fashion for 1980 with scorching version of " Alabama> Promised Land". It is quite obvious this night will be the Bob & Jerry show as they are playing off each other extremely well. Phil is not as active in the mix- as he would become in a year or two in the future, but that does not slow down what continues through this very strong first set.
The sound on this master Bob Wagner FOB recording- with NAKS CM-700 and the Sony D5 is as good as it gets. These classic analog recordings are so precious, Bob's sound stage is stunning! Phil is lite in the mix but that is more about his playing and not the recording.
The audience is there but not over saturating the music. You can even hear conversations during tunes-which sometimes is quite fun to hear. The bottom line is from 1979 to 1985 this WAS the pinnacle of analog live recording for GD music and Bob Wagner's work is a legendary part of it.
As for the rest of the first set, the band has been rehearsing and playing so many shows in such a short time- they had already played 13 so far leading up to this one, and the results show...this band is very tight and another thing is quite obvious.
Jerry LOVES his new guitar " Tiger". The set list may look like a typical workhorse outing- but his playing in almost every song is inspired and can become explosive in an instant.
Jerry's tone on this spring tour has "Tiger" being more aggressive, sharper, and raw sounding, then it would be a year later when he finally settled on that perfect "Tiger" tone IMHO.
This is put on glorious display during " Loser" and the enthusiastic crowd loves it. AON was in heavy rotation and it gives Brent plenty of room to show his chops on the Leslie organ. " Easy To Love You" from the new album gets a turn here, and it is played tentatively although Jerry knows exactly how he wants to play this song and it would be the exact way he would play come the spring of 1990 when the song reappeared.
The sparks really start to fly at " Big Railroad Blues" as the hand clapping from the audience is wild. Granted this version clocks in at just under 5 minutes it is cranking and Jerry really plays some great licks. " LL Rain" often was played during the 1st set in the early 1980's but that did not diminish it's power and this version is excellent.
Another " new" tune from the new album is fun and luckily they don't end the set with it as a joyous " Music Never Stopped" closes out this excellent set. Jerry just blows the roof off on this one.
Set II is really a barn burner with many extraordinary highlights. " Scarlet" may be short by comparison but is very good with " Fire on the Mountain" really being outstanding. Phil is stepping up his game and that helps but honestly this is all about Bobby and Jerry- as they are simply in perfect sync.
A oddly placed " Stranger" yes they want to play the newer stuff is very good and they actually jam into a triumphant " Terrapin" that is wonderful. Jerry has increased the tempo on this rendition and the entire band rises to the occasion. His vocal chops are in peak form here kids.
They drop perfectly in PITB- I always loved this combo, and although less than 9 minutes long it is quite sharp and full of energy. Phil even starts pulling on some notes from six years earlier during it.
The drums are a fast paced kettle drum barrage and the jam out of it has Phil almost playing a bass solo. " Black Peter" is well done but it is the GDTRFB that may steal this entire show as it is simply incendiary!
Jerry simple just unleashes and the band becomes explosive and delivers one of the best version of the year. They continue on with the race to the finish with the classic power house " Around> JBG" set closing combo.
One of maybe only two slip the entire night ]occurs starting "JBG" but they make up for that in spades.
A wonderful and sweet " Brokedown " closes out this fire ball, which was sandwich between Hartford-which was a HUGE show, and Boston. I am going to have to listen to that Boston show now kids.
No jet lag for for these guys.
Happy trails.
