Subject: One Half of an Interesting AUD Matrix???
Subject: One Half of an Interesting AUD Matrix???
Being from Chicago, and having this show in my possession for over thirty-three years, I've had a special love for this performance - especially the scorching 20+ minute opening which I think is one of the best The Boyz ever did. This show should be in every head's collection!
I've forgotten where I read it, but Jerry had a particular fondness for the Uptown, saying he was more relaxed with it being a bit run down and seedy. He was a little uptight playing at the Auditorium, considering it an architectural jewel. But with the Uptown, he really let loose! And it tells with the five performances they played there in '80 and '81. This show is equal to 2/27/81, which is one of the best nights of their career.
With my memory of show positions not being all that great, I've never questioned any author on where he/they were situated until now. Carefully listening to the other Munder AUD, you can tell the setup is high off the crowd and is obviously along the 1st balcony rail. It is thinner with the band's speakers pointed straight out at the floor. This Froggy recording is just the opposite: very fat with lots of - clean - reverb. THAT is the very important key to this recording. It sounds to my ears as though it's just behind the board, miced off the crowd (maybe stealth cane?) The clapping is semi-near, but not annoying.
The interesting thing about this and the Munder/Lindenbaum upload are their completely opposite characteristics leading me to wonder about the possibility of merging both to form a dual AUD matrix. The SBD is not that great and the Munder recording is clear with the band up-front. I think the thin Munder and the fat Froggy might make for a marvelous mix. I'm hoping someone will take up this challenge since this show is worth every effort to maximize this new source. Whether the two crowds would synch or mess well together is anybody's guess but, thanks in advance if any of the usual suspects try giving this a go.
