Decent show here, fairly mellow jamming but good separation and you can hear everything in the mix, although the bass is somewhat low.

1. critics who seek the perfect show.
2. enthusiasts who love every little bit
3. ramblers who may or may not speak to what's presented.
Subject: "Perfunctory?" Hardly.
" However, the second set is annoying. It screams of perfucntory jams and a status quo list. "
Huh? I must have been seeing and listening to 1980 shows in an alternate universe. Opening the Second Set with a drums that goes into a 14 minute UJB is a lot of things, but "perfunctory" and "status quo" aren't among them. Although they played it a few more times in 1980, they really didn't play UJB that much between 1978 and 1986 -- 57 was my quick count -- and certainly this one is much more unusual and jammed more than most.

The short show might have had something to do with Willie Nelson and his 2 busses waiting outside. They pulled up dutring the show.
Check history - you might find they were all heading to Some Place in Wisconsin? Oh Yeah - that place. Verify if Willie opened there that year. Hmmmmm...
I would imagine that was interesting bus ride.
We did get in for the last 3 songs. Uptown theatre will always hold a special place because it was so small the sound was "theatrical" and they just played differently. You could hear them talking between songs. Can't say that about MSG.

Again, set One is a great sound and great list and great all around. But the lack of energy in the band in the second set (whch is hard to argue given the sparse and truncated list as well as jams lack of creativity- I mean how interestes in playing are you when you decide to play 6 song and 3 of which were played in the last few shows) is a glaring annoyance to me. Sorry, I love the dead but there is no excuse for a show like this in an era where shows averaged 23 songs. 3 stars for the first set alone. No benefit from set two.
