I know the exact moment I became a Deadhead - Bobby turned away from the amps and went to the microphone and sang "I woke today". I was hooked from that very second and went on to see hundreds of shows, and was lucky enough to work for GDTS. But I will never forget that one moment in 1981.

I fully agree. To me, 1981 was the 1977 of the Brent years. Brent had finally jelled in the band and Jerry hadn't really declined. Like 1977 and 1974, nearly every show is a good one, and there are some pockets of truly amazing music (see the September Greek run and this NYE run).
* Note - one thing nobody's mentioned is the over-the-top amazing Looks Like Rain. IMO Best Evah!
I give this one a 4 only because 9/12/81 and 12/31/81 set a whole new bar for amazingness.

These Christmas shows were wonderful. Jerry's fluid playing at this stage of '81 was quite satisfying. It was not duplicated in subsequent years.
This Passenger would never have been outdone.
The rest of the first set is well played and there is Deep Elem.
The Playing jam is good for this vintage.

Solid show from start to finish. Goofy Bobby rap into Playin is supremely entertaining. A note on the tracking, Baby Blue is located after Deal, so from there on out the tracking is off by one.

The first set is very good. They get right down to it with a hot Minglewood opener.Highlights include Depp Elem, a smokin Passenger and the Althea> LL Rain> Deal trio, which is excellent. Set two features a beautiful To Lay Me Down. The jam before the Wheel is very good with the rest of the set being quite strong. Brent plays some great Moog sounds the entire set. The encore is missing, drats!

"One note of interest: Check out Bobby as they head into the Playin' Jam...one of a kind!!"
Ha! Indeed. Bobby spends a minute or two driftin and dreamin'. I must admit I have not heard of a show where that happens during Playin', before or since.

Another polished gem from the Shaman of Sound--Charlie Miller. Your efforts are not going un-noticed and are VERY APPRECIATED. This whole show--setlist and performance are top-notch. No weak spots, IMO. One note of interest: Check out Bobby as they head into the Playin' Jam...one of a kind!! Very fine performance this night.
