Subject: My 1st GD show (39 years ago today)
Drove up from Eastern Ct College on a beautiful end of summer day
Ran into several friends unexpectedly.
Was familiar with their music and previously saw JGB and Bob in 1980 (New Haven Coliseum)
It was love at first sight or you can say I got on the bus and never got off
This show still rates high on my list of 125 GD shows
A Bertha opener
Althea
My friend Leslie was so happy they played High Time
The Dew
Walking out the Civic Center after the show is another memory I’ll never forget
The drive home it was an experience
Going to sit down and give it a listen

Far from a completist, take this opinion with as much salt as needed, but to these ears this is one of the best field recordings I can recall hearing. The sense of 3D space is so (un)real. Perhaps it's best appreciated with a nice set of headphones while lying down with one's eyes closed.
The songs that were, then, new, are still in the work-in-progress-stage, mostly, and steal a bit of momentum, but the majority of the second set more than makes up for any lull one may perceive as they perform material that they aren't a hundred percent confident with yet. The end of the show really, really puts that Dead show smile on my face. The opportunity to hear these early song arrangements is always an endearing point of the Dead.
This is not one of my more well-versed periods for the band, but this recording makes this show enjoyable as much as a concert as a soundscape. Well done.
I kind of feel like Jerry is not able to support the song melodies as well with his voice on this date. The lyrics are there, but that old sweetness seems a bit lost from his voice. He's giving it all he's got, but a certain amount of subtlety seems to be missing. The other fantastic elements easily make up for this most of the time.

I was at this show and remember hearing "Touch of Grey"for the first time. I was 22 at the time and not familiar with the lyrics, I thought the Dead was signaling the end was near . Boy was I wrong, 3/4 of the way thru the show I settled down behind the stage and watched and listened, the sound was amazing the Dead had that little fish bowl swirling , Going down the road , Moring Dew , Sugar Mag , U.S. blues I was seeing the audience just like the Band was seeing the fans . The whole place was jumping and rocking away. An incredible sight. Needles to say " they never stopped rockin"
