Subject: GOD BLESS THIS REMASTER - Beerengineer deserves $20mil for this!
Despite 5/8's near perfection (when I play it I like a little flare at the end), Scarlet's best, or rather most utilitarian self, is big, booming, inciting wild eruptions of cheering, dancing, hugging, unreserved smiling and tears. No other version comes anywhere close to 6/18/83, and for the last 19 years I've lamented the lack of a crisp SBD or a really clear AUD. A few of the AUDs of it are quite good and certainly give an honest assessment of how huge this Scarlet is...and you do not miss the massive Phil bombs either. But no matter how much you futz with an EQ, or run it through audio cleanup software, Jerry is obstructed. Specifically during the solo.
So, at least a couple times a year for 19 years I've come back to check for a SBD, or a new source AUD. Some years are on me as I saw this version but never checked it carefully before tonight. I through it on a few times, heard the big echoing sound that all the decent sources have in common, and moved on. It was thanks to LAMA's app that I noticed the note from this hero that he felt he'd achieved a very good sound of one of his top 5 2nd sets.
This time I put it on, at home, on good speakers, and let it play. And for the first time could hear every note Jerry plucked and the universe shaking Phil bombs, and the crowd acknowledging they knew what was happening taboot.
This is a criminally underrated, under-listened, undervalued. & relatively unknown show. Or at least the 2nd set is. Scarlet as already noted. The Fire is also fire. PITB just rides the momentum without letting it lag and turns out to be extremely good. Deeply improvisational with group focus and individual crispness. The Wheel is also quite good, and the Dew is a top 10 all time, period. Not even counting the drums, space, and Playin reprise that's almost an hour and 10 of elite grateful dead. And it is finally audible, like really audible.
So thank you again for this whoever you are.
P.S. 2nd sets with only half decent AUDs circulating are prime opportunities for GD releases. For whatever reason they do insist on releasing show after show after show which we've had excellent recordings of for decades. Someone really needs to shake things up there.
