Subject: Nice AUD recording of a good (and fun) show
The show itself is pretty hot. Feels Like A Stranger is a funk jam opener, with a Jerry solo that is almost like a Shakedown Street solo from the era. The Loser renditions from the early 80s were frequently very good and this is another fine example, with a big, sparking guitar solo. Bird Song gives Brent and Jerry a chance to stretch out, and the China/Rider has good energy.
The PITB kicking off the 2nd set is a monster. A slowed down tempo starts the jam section, with Jerry then revving the tempo up while Brent fills in with spacey synths. A little over halfway through things become fairly free-form, feels almost like a higher tempo version of Space. The set flows from Playin' -> D/S -> The Wheel -> A quick Playin' reprise -> TOO -> Stella Blue, all of which are very strong.
The Wheel is a personal favorite from this era of the band, and this is a really nice version, with a nice extended jam building up the song and then ragged but passionate harmonizing by Bobby, Brent and Jerry. The Other One features Bobby's slashing, fuzzed stabs over Jerry's fluid soloing, and Brent alternating between droning/spacey sounds and high velocity runs. This is just a great psychedelic set of music, full of many of the band's 2nd set staples. It all finishes up with a mellow-but-grooving encore of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.
Only reason I won't give it 5 stars is only because I don't think this is quite on the same level as some of the very best shows from that year, thinking of shows across September such as Park West, the two Red Rocks shows, and the Santa Fe shows. Jerry's voice is in rough shape, which works fine for some songs but not all. And there are a fair number of vocal flubs by both him and Bobby. Still, it sounds great and it rocks, so 4 stars sounds good to me.
