Notes
Jamie's notes:
- The mix in Shakedown Street was a live work in progress for the first 6 minutes.
The levels here were adjusted for a more even listening experience.
- Shnid 96394 provided patch material for a small blip in Rooster, a few seconds of crowd before China Cat, about 4 minutes of drums, a 10 second spot in space and a tiny dropout in The Other One
Jason's notes:
- 96394 and 88940 adjusted for

Subject: Into each life some rain must fall..
so I could work at the Y camps in upstate N.Y.
This was my best summer ever.
I got turned on to the Grateful Dead.
And I got in touch with my roots.
Things were never the same
I am thankful and then some.
After Summer Camp
I went back to N.Y.C
and big changes were in store.
WBAI-FM had a great overnight Dead show.
David Nolan R.I.P.-Uncle Dave
and Spyder who gave way to Lance and his crew.
Well Lance played the Ventura show
and to my ear this Shakedown
has the weirdest backing vocals by Weir
I think it has something to do with Bobby's voice.
I like this recording for the audience banter
just folks enjoying a Dead show
As for the show itself
The jam in Shakedown is really hot
and the entire set just feels good
very mellow, good vocals, sweet jams
Lots of Phil Zone especially in the Shakedown
I never write out fantasy set lists with Rooster
but they could jam it between the slide
and Mydlands backing vocals,
Althea perhaps one of the last classic first set tunes ever written
Me & My Uncle>Mexicali-I will take a double dose in any case..
Nice placement for the China >Rider
Weir gets all the Looks Like Rain vocals
Might as Well would get pretty rare very soon.
Jerry closes One and opens two with Rain & Snow
Far From Me- It is a cool tune but needed something in the way that the later Brent tunes had more built in jams.
Same thing with Tons of Steel great imagery but nothing to build upon.
Here comes Truckin' to save the day!
"pro-cane"-?Except for the Far From Me in that weird slot for it the rest of Set Two is all classic GD.
I probably wouldn't consider TOUCH as a classic yet
but it also wasn't completely overplayed by MTV
at this point in time.
I like the way they subtly drop into EYES.
I am listening show by show to 1973 and trust me
this is not in the same universe with any of those shows
but still the Dead stayed true to the jams.
I still hear that brilliance and searching for the sound.
This Ain't 73 but it is also not the crap emanating from the radio during 1984.
When I got turned on in 1984
I went all in
My college work suffered
My Day Jobs suffered
Some of my relationships suffered
i just wanted as much of the music that I could get.
As an introvert I was never all that front and center
but wow did I like the whole enchilada.
It would take me awhile to get to some Cali shows
but sure loved it when I did.
The East Coast was a blast and extremely high energy
some of the wildest party shows were East Coast
but the vibe in Cali was almost beyond spiritual.
It does come across in the recordings
but had to be experienced
to resonate.
One thing about the later years
Bill and Mickey had the drumming down
Just incredible dancin' to the Rolling Thunder.
So this is another one of those California shows
maybe you get it just listening
I hope you do.
Here is a tip for the 1980's:
If you notice in a recording
that they are going from one tune to the next without pause.
What I call Freight Training
then chances are they were dialed in.
This show they freight train
China>Rider>LLR>Mightyswell to close Set one
and then the entire 2nd set is freight trained.
Just label this SPACE as Prelude to the Other One
as the energy for it is just building from all involved parties.
Will Heal reverb Weir at some point.?
Wow that is intense
and the jam went out blistering
Stella Blue- will be the much needed ballad
"A waste is a terrible thing
to mind"
Pretty amazing how those 30 + song shows of 1973
would get distilled into these sweet shows of the 80's
Very mellow Stella Blue up to the 'Cheap Motel' line
and then Brent and the Rhythm section rise up.
I could really dance on air it was so easy
and the gentleness was there
to go out on a limb
MAKING LOVE TOGETHER
IN A WORLD
TIME FORGOT
the shorter to the point Round & Round
and yes It is Saturday Night
e) Dawn is breaking Everywhere..
