Subject: Classic Grateful Dead in October
Subject: Classic Grateful Dead in October
There is something truly special about the Grateful Dead and October, and like the World Series the sparks can fly and when they have home filed advantage to0 they will usually play to win.
This notable six show run historically has received more attentions for the last three shows at the Berkley Community Theatre, than the first three.
This Sunday show is sharp and wonderfully played from start to finish.
It starts with a classic early 1980's first set, with things really starting to hit the stratosphere with an exceptional Bird Song- with the entire band really complimenting each other. Brent is relaxed but listening carefully, Bobby tone is getting more edgy but he plays quite tactfully and Phil on his six string is profound in his playing and Jerry is spot on..
This naturally evolves into a common first set L. L. Rain that is quite moving and ends with a smokin' Deal with Jerry's volume not an issue- he does hit a couple sour notes, but this 24 bit Rob Lamarre recording puts you right where you want to be, which for him was not in the second night of the official taper's section.
Set II starts with the second Terrapin Station opener in October-something I wished they did more often, and it is splendid version with Jerry's vocals and playing quite strong.
This sequences in a short but fully engaged PITB before dropping into a moving China Doll for the Bay area faithful. There is about 10 minutes of improvised playing after this which is quite good and extremely rare for this time period.
The Drumz>Space is typical of this era with a classic race to the finish with the well treaded by late 1984 of the Wheel> T. Stones> NFA, which is passionately played and tight.
Jerry send faithful off with a stirring rendition of Baby Blue, the perfect emotional and musical closure to this strong performance.
Happy trails.

Truly awesome third quarter and nearly perfect second set. Honestly love this whole show. That October '84 sound reaches its peak, here. My favorite from the run. Bravo!
