An exceptional second set.
This is a great beginning to a very good three show run. The first set is good, but the first few songs are aliitle underwhelming. Aiko is always a nice opener and has some sound issues and a couple vocal miscues early in teh set by Jerry
The Queen jane is very good, until Brent's solo when he switches from the electric piano, it is almost a shock at the tone of his organ. There are other points in which he kinds misses the mark with what sound he should use.
Blow Away has Phil really stepping it up, and is a good if not a modest version on Brent's part. Sadly, Jerry is way undermixed. The Cassidy is short and sweet and a decent Deal rounds out the set.
Set II.. well that is another story. They pull off a one off of China Cat> Crazy Fingers> IKYR and it is really good but the transition in and out of Crazy Fingers is very enjoyable, but not outstanding.
I would differ to 6/1/91 for an exceptional transition from Crazy Finger> China Cat- once again a one off. Why this was not attempted more, as it was really a perfect coupling.
When they drop into INYR that is when this set excels. The band is in top form and Phil is driving the music incredible well and Jerry is more than loud enough.
This drops into-- which at the time was a PITB that conjured up comparisons to Kezar Stadium from May of 1973. They even fully complete it closing it out with the Playin' Reprise.
D/S is also very good.
The rest of the set is extremely well played with an unconventional song choice. An earlier pairing of the Wheel>Gimme Some Lovin' rocks the raceway with Phil's hammer of the gods approach to being heard several miles away.
The Believe it of Not was a rare jewel that was only around for alittle over a year, and this rendition is remarkable. The Sugar Mag is fun, with Bobby being alittle course in his tone- and out of tune at points, in his playing.
Jerry send the faithful off with a stunning Black Muddy River.
Yes, back in the day we heard this alot, but man it was an exceptional encore. A perfect vehicle for Jerry's emotional crooning- and yes in 1988 Jerry's voice was in exceptional condition.
Now onto the other big star of this show...the incomparable Charlie Miller. These Ultramatrix remastering are exceptional- and that is put on its glorious full sonic display for the entire second set.
How lucky can we still be?
Grateful as always for it all.
Happy trails.
