I'd seen individual shows in Hampton and Roanoke before this, but this and the next night were my first consecutive shows. Was so "involved" at the time that I didn't really appreciate the actual music - yes, I enjoyed it, but my critical capabilities were, shall we say, compromised ;-) was down with a bunch of fellow recent HS grads from Norfolk/Va Beach, most of whom are still around and still in touch, a blessing. I remember the lot scene was wide open and fun & friendly, with generally good, relaxed vibes, which wasn't always the case in this era. Listening now, I reckon these shows are pretty good. Not classics, but solid. Blue unicorns, anyone?

For those of us that got to enjoy this period this was an average show. Grateful Dead history has many peaks and valleys (some quite deep). You have late 69 through 71. 73-74 stands on it's own. Sections of 77-79 are wonderous. Then you have spring of 89 till Brent's demise. Parts of 90-91 are also fantastic, but without question this period was one of their best.
Was never a big Brent fan as far as his songs were concerned. Actually have been blamed for his death by friends at was at albany 90 3rd night with in a tounge and cheek way. Had front row seats (been close enough to be spit on by Bobby with GA tickets twice but actually sat front row Jerry side) Before they started someone was screaming "Do I don't need love" Brent was very into the encouragement. My big mouth finally said "No, thanks Brent" and his whole demeanor changed and he went into his shell.
During this Blow Away he really was at his Brent best. Miss is playing dearly they were never the same afterwards. "You;ve got to put your hand in the air, and open it!" People actually did this.

Between average and pretty good show for the dead (which is already nearly perfect). Like the last review said, typical for '89.
Soulful China>Rider and an excellent Drums>Space.
Great SBD recording. Worth a listen.

What a great time ! General admission on the floor ,overnight camping in the parking lot ,, which would be banned later in the year. The lot scene was in full bloom like some kind of colorful carnival of gypsies, and the band was playing good .Jerry was looking and singing better than he had in a long time .

Forever imprinted on my memory. Not only my first show, but also my first dose. Trekked down by car from Connecticut with Pete Alegi (a long ride, but good company!). Arrived in town and was immediately stunned by the "sprawl" of the parking lot scene. Dropped right before entering. The Coliseum is basically a big gymnasium feel -- it was GA and we crushed our way into the front 1/3 of the floor, more on the Jerry side of things. Sound was good (a little echo/booming, but good). Highlights for me were mostly in the 2nd set, though I was psyched to hear Masterpiece and Birdsong (who wouldn't be!). China>Rider was bouncy and sweet. He's Gone stole my face. What more can I say? Was tripping hard by then. I remember looking around at the start of Sugar Mags and getting this nice synchronicity between Mickey and Billy's cymbals and the visual of (for some reason, this is what I remember) lots of shiny bracelets and necklaces all swinging to the rhythm of it all. Anyway, that was '89. This is '09. I'm still truckin' 20 years later and listen to the Boys daily. Thank you Archive! This show isn't a stand-out for any reason, but it will always be a big thing for me -- it started a lifelong love affair with the best band that ever rocked. Period. Went to the show out at the Gorge, WA this year. Good, but nothing compares to the good ol' days.
