My 66th Show
I really like this show a lot. It has its share of lyric flubs, but the energy is high and the song choices are great. I’ve always thought that, in general, the boys played just as well if not better on the 30th then on the 31st (though you can’t mistake the difference in the energy of the room on NYE). I love the Bertha> Good Lovin’ opener. What’s not to like? Really this whole set is above average, with the band having something to say on each song. I love Jack-A-Roe, one of my favorite “rarities.” Masterpiece is a great example of how the Dead build a song, starting mellow and steadily building the intensity - Bobby leads the way here. West LA is on point, and Music is always a cool closer. The second set brings the return of Jack Straw> China> Rider as they did earlier in December at Long Beach. Throw in a strong Estimated and a long Terrapin and we’re talking about some of the best songs and Dead do. Another trippy Other One, never disappoints. They close Saturday Night and the crowd is ecstatic. I have great memories of enjoying this show with some of my best friends at the time. Ahh, to be young.
