A very fine GD concert in Eugene
This was the last show Brent Mydland played on the west coast, and the last time I saw him live. Not sure which show # this was for me. I quit counting after the first 100, but I know what a good ol' laid-back west coast show feels and sounds like, and this day in Eugene was a very good one. It was family time for the Grateful Dead - the Kesey family was there, Bill Graham was cruising around smiling, weather perfect, Sound in Autzen was excellent (it's the only football stadium I ever saw the GD play in so I don't know how they all compare), and there was laffy tank backstage with even Jerry in line between sets. Friendly audience, and the band could feel it, my folks all felt it, I can hear it in this MATRIX oh yes I can... Just for a taste, check out Loose Lucy, SSDD, and one of the finer Brokedown Palace renditions ever - Gracia's guitar solo on this is sublime and perfect.

My 17th show
Nothing special musically. I had just seen the Cal Expo shows, only one of which was really good, and was hoping for a better run in my home state. Unfortunately not: both days were pretty lackluster, and this was the less lustrous of the two. I remember we had a good time and were happy to be there, and it's a great set list, but musically it's not one of my favorites.
