Echo chamber
This shed (Hollywood Casino) is a ways S of Chicago - actually halfway between Gary and Joliet. It was brand new at the time and had some serious kinks (designed for concerts and yet the echo/acoustics were worse than sports arenas). The show has a nearly 2hr second set, but will always be known for being the next-to-last show for Brent. There may be a vid release some day, as it was shot and is in the vault. The best '90 shows are in March>May & the fall, but this has key moments. The SBD helps us "cheat" past the swimming sound of being there.
First Set. The opening Box leaves no suggestion for the greatness of Stranger. X-factor comes early with this nearly-perfect presentation; and check Phil. Same goes for the following Loser, with its nice tempo and appetizing solo. Bon appétit. Mwah! As a relative rarity, Beat it on Down the Line-24 is nice in context. West L.A. has a nice tempo but is otherwise uncommitted. A similar lack of intent pervades Masterpiece. Far from Me is the final one. Jer gives all to a great solo, but hearing Brent's "this is my last fuckin' song for you, bitch" is uncomfortably eerie. Tennessee is in firm form but that can't be said for the Hellina closer (note the usual openers/closers are reversed). Bobby trainwrecks it, but Jer again compensates impressively, and by the end it leaves 'em happy for the break.
Second Set. Samson is fun - a real whipper, and just what's ordered for this show. Hey Pocky A-way is also the final one, and a relative rarity (just 3 in '90; the best is 3/28). It's nice, but Estimated is lackadaisical and flat until the last few mins. Eyes starts with a weird band mix. It's weedy, and though Phil is great it never quite picks up. The long intro into The Wheel is pretty sweet, but they are not 100% together by Gimme Some Lovin'; and Stella is klunky.Throwing Stones is even more so, and bathetic in this slot. Lovelight is given the minimal required effort from most. With a better Knockin' On Heaven's Door, the set's bookends are best (though it's not a very expansive version).
1st Set: C+
2nd Set: C-
Overall = 2½ stars
Highlights:
Feel Like a Stranger - unusually good
Loser - nice tempo, appetizing solo
Samson & Delilah - real whipper
SOURCES: The most-fixed SBD is the scotton_miller_115497. There are multiple uploads of the same AUD, but with different claims of provenance. The
133842_sbd_chasingwilma claims it's an AUD MTX, but is identical to the Healy SBD, except with poor balance. The bertha_9397 is an EQd version of the SBD. The AKG451_Darby AUD runs fast. Hey Pocky A-way is on the All the Years Combine DVD.
