Subject: Wonderful audience recording
Subject: Wonderful audience recording
By 1991, the Grateful Dead had settled into somewhat of a pattern when it came to three-night stands in any given city. Night 1: Get the juices flowing with an upbeat setlist. Night 2: Cool it off a bit and let things mellow. Night 3: Shoot whatever is left of the collective wad. So, this is pretty much a typical "Night 2" is that regard. But note that "sublime" doesn't equal "boring". It's more like the second act of a great play, when you know Act 3 is going to pull out all the stops. And so, the band does a solid, slow burn on this night, with some true gems, including one of the best versions of "He's Gone" that you're going to find from any era. One gets the feeling that Vince is still getting his sea legs, and he's staying a bit in the back, letting Bobby carry the rhythm section on this night.
The sound is amazing. It's this kind of audience source that really captures the energy in the room. The kind that you need to hear to remind you why the Grateful Dead were such a fantastic live band. There's other great audience sources from other years in this same arena -- I think the Georgia Heads just got it and understood where it was appropriate to go nuts and where it was time to stay quiet and let the band do their thing. The result here is a very ALIVE recording with both clarity and just the right amount of crowd to really take the energy to the next level. Really amazed that this one hasn't been grabbed more often.

This tape is one of the best native AUD's I have ever heard. While the SBD of this amazing show is stellar, perfect, almost medical in it's quality - this recording captures the above average - even for the Deadicated Atlanta/Athens audience - response to the show.
This show rose up like a Phoenix (the symbol of Atlanta) with Help>Slipknot>Franklins and the peaking just didn't let up!
For the little Athens group I was with it turned into a three day party! And the Music never stopped.
I'm a computer engineer, not a sound engineer, but if I was I would make a MTX from this AUD and the SBD of this night.
Please, please, someone let me know that this is not a fantasy and where I can get a copy!!!
In the meantime, enjoy this rare, heavy, precise, and outstanding show (and recording)!
