Subject: “Meet Up” Thoughts
Subject: “Meet Up” Thoughts
I heard this show for the first time last night when I attended the “meet up” screening at a local theater. Full disclosure, this is plainly not my era of GD music. I was no fan of stadium shows or the band’s direction post “Touch of Grey” stardom, and no longer regularly attended shows. I thus have no basis to assess where this particular show fits within the rest of the specific run, tour, or even entire year of shows. With those caveats, the movie nonetheless reinforced a number of my general feelings about shows from this period, e.g., Jerry’s voice was pretty ragged, Vince’s obnoxious tone and finger-banging technique was often distracting, cringeworthy, and overbearing (if only there was a mute button for him), Bob’s falsetto howl-screaming (particularly in the LLR coda) is a laughable abomination, etc. And yet, in spite of any of that, or the occasional sloppiness, there was still a lot to like. First, it was the “real” Grateful Dead with a guy named Jerry Garcia playing electric guitar, clear-eyed, engaged and often apparently enjoying the proceedings. He also got to trot out his latter-day horn sounds on the terrific final solo during Shakedown. Phil was on point throughout, expertly driving the mix as always. The drums and space were both excellent, showcasing the band at its most comfortable and interesting. And the post-space, instrumental Dark Star—>Playing reprise segment was terrific, simultaneously explorative and crisp. The occasionally head-scratching camera work and rudimentary visual electronic interludes ended up endearing. All told, it was a fun ride and I left really glad the video exists and that I got to experience it. To be sure, I am saddened there is not more video like this for future generations to see from the band’s earlier glory times (if only there had been a Nugs equivalent in the late 60s and 70s). But, true as that may be, I say don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Subject: Soldier Field Must Listen!!
Subject: Soldier Field Must Listen!!
Managed to sneak up to the front row, with my (then) girlfried, for this one during the second set right in front of Jerry. I swear he was staring down right at us for Crazy Fingers. In reality, he was most likely staring at their Persian rug. This 24 bit master from the usual suspects is quite suberb. Giving five for the sound quality, the show would be 3.5-4
