Hey Gang, well , I gave this a 5 star rating because : it's a digital source, a nice matching 4 mic mix, and it's not plagued with handclaps and crowd cheer like many FOB (front of board) recordings. I have a number of shows with Sennheiser ME-80's that I enjoy. Yes, they are shotguns but they yield a nice tight sound field and this show has some nice 421 cardiods for some ambience. So, it sounds like a nice professional audience source.
I saw this run of Deer Creek shows and they were all well performed, some sets were better than others but overall not a bad run. The 1st set was a little lack luster in my opinion and my taper buddy J.P who was running Nak 300's with a AT cardiod of which I had my Sony D7 patched out from his Sony D3. My buddy and I kinda looked at each with big eyes of hope that the 2nd set would be better; we had some help from our friend mr. blotter. After all, it was Robert Hunter's birthday and it was the last show of the summer tour! Suffice to say, the second set was really good.
A nice strong Samson starts out the set, it was sunday too! Way to go Home is performed with perfection perhaps my favorite version with Jerry simply doing lead guitar solos throughout the song with a relaxed but confident playing. I was surprised with Wave to the Wind as they didn't play it that much and it seemed they re-arranged the tune without so many lyrics? Terrapin Station is ok , but the jam on the end was special and very unique. The vibe from the jam seemed to segue through drums and space; however, NOBODY expected Dark Star. It was cool that Garcia followed up with The Wheel a nice JG combo. Good Lovin was well played with groove and energy; and yes, Lucy in the Sky for the encore was a nice cap on top of a psychedelic evening by the Grateful Dead. (we kinda had a feeling that LSD would be played as we could hear it as a short soundcheck waiting in line to get in show which took forever at Deer Creek)
I've heard many audience recordings of this show including the FOB with the AMS ST-250 and this recording is a excellent lawn recording.
