The previous night was best-of-run, with this show being both better and worse. The lows are pretty cringeworthy - even in person, given that a couple of my friends sold/miracled their next night tix and fled.
First Set. Wow, Touch as opener again? The last three times they came to Colo they played a Touch opener (12/12/90, 6/28/91 & 12/3/92). This one has no Jer guitar. He shows up halfway into a trainwreck of a Greatest Story. The next several are average, then Bobby plays acoustic on Me & My Uncle. For Big River, Jer leaves it wide open so the focus can be on Vince. Suddenly things click for Loose Lucy, the best song since the first set the night before. Then, shocker, an ace Cassidy. I made a two-AUD matrix of this that sounds better, and I think if we had a SBD we'd be noting this Cassidy as a best-of-era. You don't have to play well the whole set, you only need to leave 'em happy for the break.
Second Set. I don't know many Heads that would be chuffed by this setlist, but there is a bonus song before Drums, so take yr least fave and pretend it's not there, and like a Magic Eye poster the setlist improves. Not sure what Jer is trying to do on Victim. The Bobby part is average but the Jer part is weirdly non-committal. On Samba in the Rain, I'm not convinced everyone is playing the same Dead song. Jer loses the thread on Crazy Fingers - and a couple times the whole band. You might think here comes a Bobby song, things will improve. But for Estimated he does his faux-Muppet shouting. The end jam is okay, steered by Vince and Bobby playing squeak-MIDI. Terrapin has more missed cues and jumped half measures. Space is the set peak. Miracle is another mess; again the final jam is led by Vince. In contrary, Standing on the Moon isn't bad. However Lovelight is bathetic as a set closer, with Bobby vamping in front of the most basic possible version. Liberty is just solid enough to leave 'em a little less discomfited.
1st Set: C-
2nd Set: D-
Overall = 1¼ stars [1 + ¼ for Cassidy]
Highlights:
Cassidy - best of run
SOURCES: The _138023_.mgUM70S has much better clarity, especially the second half of set 2. It's not great, but better ones are still MIA, as are SBDs. It needs pitch correction in the first set of +1% for Touch, and -1% for Uncle>Cassidy. It also has very low levels. The 141191_FOB_Schoeps is better in places, with better low end, but I couldn't hang with all the nearby talking.
