Good Morning Little Schoolgirl > Death Don't Have No Mercy, Sittin' On Top Of The World, Dark Star
Notes
AUD> MR> D> PCM> D> CD> EAC> SHN; circulates as filler for 5/7/69; via J. Cotsman to vine
This is all that circulates of this show from an outstanding audience recording that is often mistaken for a soundboard. It is likely that several minutes of Schoolgirl are missing, and there is a dropout at roughly 0:40. Only the first few notes of Death Don't & Top Of The World are
missing.

Dark Star is such a weird tune. I've never heard a tape from '68 this good quality, whatever it's origins. Sweet, mellow 1st set.

I didn't verify all 4 tracks but I'm certain Sitting On Top Of The World is identical to the gd1968-03-29.sbd.miller.108993 version here on the archive.

Dick Latvala attributed this "3/26/68" recording to the 3/29 Carousel show.
I'm not positive about this - no songs are duplicated, but the sound isn't quite the same. The "3/26" tape has much less echo than the later Carousel recordings. (I think the sound here is quite good.)
In any case, this "3/26" show is definitely NOT from the Melodyland in Anaheim, as the Archive file claims! (Though the band had played there earlier that month.) The Dead, as far as we know, did not play the Carousel or anywhere else on March 26. So presumably the "3/26" tape comes from one of the Carousel dates of 3/29 to 3/31 - though it could be from any unattributed show that month.

This show is listed as Carousel Ballroom on both dead.net and in the taping compendium, for what its worth. Not bad, but there's certainly much better '68 to choose from.

This recording is worth checking out. It's not flawless and it's only four tracks, but the sound quality makes it worthwhile.

True, this is not as good as some the material from January and February (check out 1/20 and 2/14/68). But, this show is as good as some of this material, and is better than the historic 3/3/68 Haight Street concert. Each of the 4 songs really is top notch. 1968 is a great year.
Some think of ’68 Dead as ancient history, but this show is a throwback to an earlier era with the resurrection of Sittin’ on Top of the World: this is the first time they played it since mid-1966. Phil says “We never did that one very good even when we were doing it.” I have to disagree, as this and 1966 versions are great stuff. The band began to play it regularly again in 1969.
This show also resurrected the 1966 Death Don’t Have Now Mercy: they had only played it twice in the past year. After the performance, it became part of the regular rotation.
There’s a reason the Dead began digging up oldies: They had been playing the Anthem of the Sun material almost exclusively during the past 7 or 8 months (with Dark Star>China Cat>Eleven thrown in only in the couple of months). The Anthem recording sessions where now just about over, and they were looking for other things to play.
Jerry is expressive vocally and strong on guitar in this Death, which is faster than it was a year later. The Schoolgirl here is also good: Pigpen is in form and the rest of the band is jamming, not vamping. This song sometimes got repetitive, but this one is fresh sounding.
Dark Star is mellow and dreamy. I like it better than the 1971 Dark Stars. The Dark Star ending is unusual for this time. They had been playing Dark Star>China Cat>Eleven for the past few months.
I like this show (or show fragment). I usually rate the performance, not the recording, but this audience recording is pretty decent.

Typical '68 high energy and yes its a fine Death Don't Have No Mercy, but compared to the music from Jan/Feb this comes up short. It also sounds like the band is underwater. There are better aud's of March '68. Four tracks, three stars, sorry...

... of tunes. The quipster after Sitting on Top sounds to me however like Phil, not Jerry -- not nasal enough.

For an AUD, you don't hear any audience, but you do get some sense of the ambience of the room. Not much noise. Also not without flaws, but still a great listen.
I saw "Death Don't" performed a couple times in '89, and it did not have this blues-roots sound. Very different with simple keyboard and single drummer. Dark Star: early truncated version.

Holy cow, this is amazing! Great show, unbelievalbel quality for 38 years old, this is a true gem and quality is much better than many later recordings. Crisp, clear Dark Star. The forces tear lose from the axis. Thank you Sunshine Daydream for the tips!

This show was such a pleasant surprise to find. The vocals are clear and the music is solid. Sure, there are flaws, but to hear something this good from a 40 year old audience cassette tape recording shows the technical wizardry of those who remixed and downloaded it. Thank you whoever you are. It is rare to find a stand alone version of "Dark Star" (i.e. not part of a larger jam) and this one is extremely good. Definitely worth a CD; better if you combine it with tracks 3-9 of the 3-30-68 Carousel Ballroom show.

Worth downloading- loose, kick-butt 4 song set.
Under-reviewed, so I'll kick in hearty 5 stars - really like the laid back deep throated vocals by Garcia.
Yes, it's an Audience tape, yet sounds great for '68.
No nonsense early Dark Star, 3 fingers way up.Starting to come together, yet still new and fresh.
Raucously cool Sittin' On Top Of The World, after which Jerry quips,
"Well, we never did that one good even while we were doin' it."
Good Morning Schoolgirl has Pigpen's standard slam-band ending; snakey jam weaves throughout.
Strong version of Death Don't Have No Mercy, the dulcet and dopey appeal of Garcia's vocal chops here contrast with the thinner higher range applied to it by 1969.
