The usual cast of suspects invade Dayton. Well, we are hanging left of the board area and it is a general madness affair. Some security guy flashes us on our herb break and a flying finger is flown that way from the light lady. The Ross' and I were impressed. Fun show! Thanks again for making it so easy to listen to classic sound! Furthur now.

Subject: Hot Damn
Was drawn in by this show by reading about a contest on Furthur.net about a disastrous one time only cover of a song (Mack the Knife) and boy were they right. But the rest of the show was simply amazing couldn't stop listening, wonderful Let it Grow, Roses, Eyes, and Other to name a few, Thanx to all

They don't even get to the chorus of Mack The Knife! It is like when I saw Stir It Up at Hampton. It was fun for a minute, but it was in no way an amazing tune that they did well. They kept saying stir It Up unitl they realized no one knew the words for the rest of the tune!

Subject: Mack the Joke
God, I am so sick of hearing about Mack the knife...

I was there & Big Mack was Bob warbling for 30 seconds while Jerry worked on guitar problems. But some people have to have the new notch in their setlist holsters I guess. Give me another great Other One instead of some crappy breakout song just because I never heard it. To each their own I guess......

And give me a great Other One Jerry did indeed. After a nice space which hinted at the heights they'd attain several days later in Champain & Indianapolis, they play an Other One with some passages in the second instrumental verse where Jerry's playing & riffs have a tone that can only be described as diabolical & downright sainister at times. It's really something else to behold & different from anything I've heard from the 80's or 90's. Check it out. Then, the Wharf Rat to end all Wharf Rats. The jam coming out hits the highest peaks I've ever heard for this song, with each line of riffs ending on two notes that sound eerily like the first two notes of St Stephen - again, check it out. I was damn sure they were going to drop off & play it (or hoping against hope, lol), but instead Jerry keeps building it up & up - breathtaking & right when I'm expecting St Stephen (remember, the previous two versions of St Stephen had come after Wharf Rat too), they drop off into Sugar Mag, and a very good one at that. Definitely my candidate for the best TOO > Wharf Rat > Sugar Mag ever (by 'ever', I mean once the GD had returned from hiatus in 1976 & settled into their second set split with drums every night format in Fall 1977/Early 1978).

Other highlights include a very early Birdsong, second song, and a fantastic Let It Grow to end the first set.

Subject: Skating into heaven
Hey Now, Whoa! I'd forgot this special event. The place was a hockey rink, making me think of Winterland. I was at college in Yellowsprings, Ohio near by. I invited a unique group of friends down for the weekend. This was a very friendly show as the place was intimate for a skating rink. On our feet the entire night. From the Mack the Knife, to the Women are Smarter
{ women studies were big back then} to sun shining daydream. The music never stopped.
Also we all stayed at a nearby motel. In the morning we raided the coffee machine supplies, got enough of those single pack coffee packs to last the entire winter. a splendid time was had by all, including the band as the music just poured over the hall!
The recording is thick in spots, but giving the excitement on the floor that night the taper did an excellent job!

Subject: Empty House
Road trip from the Fiji house (Denison) to Dayton with the whole house. Emma-Jean (the cook) didn't know what was goin' on. An excellent show, general admission on the floor in a small arena!, great sound, excellent show, at least everyone thought so except Sully who thought it was too generic, yah right, Mack-the-Knife! Thanks, it's great to update my collection.

Subject: Great 2nd Set
.............................................................................................. Another show I've had for over twenty years...or should I say 1/2 a show I've had. My copy is from a hand-held F.O.B. that is very good. Like many uploads on this site, I hope my source will be added someday so we can get a better sounding show with audience ambience. The four stars is because my F.O.B. is sooo much better.

Subject: Before the Flood
I remember this show. My brother and I traveled from Louisville to Dayton in my 1972 Toyota Corolla wagon on a cold and snowy evening. A dose of shrooms made the trip all the more adventurous and exciting. When we arrived in Dayton, we stopped at a gas station to ask for direction to Hara Arena. The guy we asked said "Oh yeah man....Grand Funk Railroad!!". A wave of panic washed over us...Oh my God...could we have possibly screwed this up, and driven in the cold rain and snow to see Grand Funk??? Luckily not. The Hara Arena was a small venue. Maybe 2000 to 3000 folks there at the most....no reserved seats....just a big open dance floor. The crowd was of course very laid back and friendly. If I remember correctly, which is questionable at best, the boys came out to tune up and everyone was having such a good time that they just started the show about 20 minutes early. Great crowd, great music, a swell dance concert. A wonderfully intimate time was had by all. Still have my ticket stub!!!
