Haven't listened to this yet, just perusing. I can remember going with my extraterrestrial GF at the time. We both religiously propped the dudes up on the alter during the 70s and found a news clip or something for this not-sure show. But loaded in the Dragnet-mobile, a 1966 black Valiant, we went, of course. OH GOD...Joan was there. Mickey had been bitten by the vampiress and was bleeding for her. I remember We were spaced and having fun. I yelled..."Stone the martyr.... Then the DEAD showed up and all was cool until the encore. But, seriously, we had a great time and...are you kidding me. Seeing the Dead in a basketball auditorium with maybe another 1,000 people? WTF. Living in the Bay Area between 1972 and 1992 was Dorothy on the Yellow Brick road before meeting the big WIG. Now it's toilet paper in water....sort of. I still live here and love it. BUT. We all now need or grain of salt as big as a bowling ball

At the time we all thought Joan was kind of an icon - I suppose we still think that. Reading the reviews and looking at the set list, you get the impression that the band thought it needed to make up for something.

I am soooooooo grateful to find this show here. I was there, no promise of the dead, just a hint (3 or 4 band members were listed as Joan's "friends")
At this show a friend of mine turned to his buddy and asked "so how do they make you feel when they play?" the response: "anywhere from wanting to throw a rotten tomatoe on stage to wanting to SELL EVERYTHING AND FOLLOW THEM EVERYWHERE"
I haven't yet done either but I think it was this show that took me from a "fan" to a "head"
THANK YOU!
not the best quality but I give it a 5 for uniqueness!

I have a soundboard of this one and becuase of the size of the venue, nothing is really being pumped through the PA. Nope, the audience recording of this is much better.

Benefit shows are a real treat and were one of the great perks of living in California. The sound isn't pristine but I would recommend at least streaming this show. As was pointed out, this is a small venue and you can hear it on the recording. There is a wonderful, warm ambience to the recording which really gives you a sense of connection with the band. I've listened to hundreds of dead shows and I allways like finding the hidden gems like this one that fall just a little bit outside the norm.

This show was advertised as a Dance For Disarmament benefit w/Joan Baez and friends, including Jerry & Bob and was held at an old fairgrounds exhibit hall. No mention of electric Dead was advertised anywhere. Tix were snapped up rather quickly and I recall many folks getting shut out. Even as we got in and saw Mickey Hart and Mimi Farina's sets, there was still no reason to believe the Dead would play a set. As we suffered through Joan's show, the crowd was getting restless and yelling out Dead tune requests. At one point, Joan attempted to quiet the crowd by saying something to the effect that we'll hear all those tunes when the Dead come out for their electric set. The crowd went bananas.
This was the smallest crowd for a Dead show I ever attended. Maybe 1500? It certainly wasn't over crowded and there was tons of room to dance. I ended up standing underneath Brent's hammond and could actually reach up and grab his leg if I wanted to.
The Dead's portion of the show is short but rocking. Just being in such a small room was reason enough not to complain about the shortness. Quality of this audience is decent. There must be a soundboard out there somewhere.

I was at this show. I recorded it on my SONY D5/Nak300 mics. The concensus of opinion among my circle of friends amounted to "sheeesh, thank god the Joan set is over" hopefully we'll get enough Real GD to make the trip worth it.As it turned out the Deads' set was short, without jam sequences but played with a focused intensity and clarity that really left the crowd begging for more....but since the Joan set was so long.... I did not DL the recording and cannot compare it to mine I'm simply remarking on the show. Oh, and by the way we were polite during Joans' performance, not wanting to spoil it for those that were enjoying it. Our fingers were crossed in hopes of seeing the boys sans JB,

The acoustic Baez set is very pleasant and it is a fantastic aud! The band clearly holds back from blowing a load and Brent seems to duck in and out depending on the tune. Still there are passionate renditions of many tunes including an emotional Lady Di and I and The Boxer. Mickey was taggin her during this time so I guess she felt a little obligated to help his ailing career!! Great for a nice filler.....electric set is worthless.
