This Cold Rain and Snow is one of my favorites. They're all over it like Pig Pen on a little school girl. I wish the recording was better.

are there two more thematically diametrically opposed songs in the repertoire than Feel Like a Stranger and Bird Song?

Nice Stranger/Bird Song opener and a great Esau for the 1st set. A tasty Help>Slip>Frank opening the 2nd, the boys smoking it up for earth day 1983.

I hitched down from my north/central Mass. high school - under the pretenses of visiting my first-choice college that lay a few miles up 91. This was a great show and a great tour. I hadn't seen any of the fall tour so this was my first esau. I do remember the Phil bombs drilling holes into my gut, unfortunatley tweeked by the the high-speed vitamin a. I think this was also my first Help, Slipnot, Franklin which were somewhat rare at that time. Thanks for encouraging me to listen again to the early 80 shows.

This recording is easy on the ears.
Great mix/seperation with satisfactory recording levels (don't have to crank the stereo up).
Feel Like A Stanger has lots of energy.
Skipped to second set.
Help>Slip>Frank - fast and fun.
5 star rating for recording.

I do believe the first set of this night was the first tapes I ever got, some 24 years ago. One of the best Strangers I've ever heard, with good Phil boms in Cold Rain & Snow. I also love the marimba during the intro to Brother Esau.
Second set is high energy as well, at least the first half. The transition from the end of Franklin's into Samson is great. After that, ho-hum.
4 stars.

Phil was nuts these two nights. I also hitched from Boston. I stood on the offramp with my girlfriend and a $100 bill in my hand lookin for two tickets. We scored and went inside only to get our bones rattled by Phils new bass. Check out the last verse of Ship, he hits a note that shook the building. No lie. I am not sure if this recording captures that note properly, but it was monsterous. Also 4-23. The intro to Other One may have cracked my ribcage. Definately worth the Hitch from Beantown and the $100 bill. Thanks archive.org for the bonecracking memory.

Agreed. the next night(4/23) is one of the best shows of all time. Hopefully, a soundboard will arrive one day here at Archive.org to replace my fine sounding Aud.
Thanks Archive.org.
PS- This show ain't bad either!

Subject: New Haven cops were over the top out front
This was one of those classic imbalances that happened every once in a while where there were just far too many people there relative to the available tickets and desparation was in the air - the New Haven cops were on horseback and herding us like in 'planet of the apes' bad vibes before the show - everyone drove up from the city looking to score and came away with donuts... hot first set and good to franklins and then just lost altitude not one of the stronger shows of spring '83 when there were alot of others like UVM Byrne Bing etc hitched down from Boston for this freak show.....

I really enjoyed this first set. And the whole show was loads of fun from the 20th row on the floor. Phil is really enjoying his new bass and Bobby's singing is a hoot, too.
